Police in Leskovac have arrested the flotation plant manager at the “Lece” mine in Medveđa on suspicion of committing the criminal offenses of environmental pollution and failure to take environmental protection measures.

Members of the Ministry of the Interior in Leskovac, in cooperation with officers of the Criminal Police Directorate, the Crime Suppression Service, and the Department for Combating Environmental Crime, arrested D. S. (born 1978), the flotation plant manager at the “Lece” mine in Medveđa, on suspicion that he committed the criminal offenses of environmental pollution and failure to take environmental protection measures, the Ministry of the Interior announced.

“He is suspected of failing to comply with a decision of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management, and of continuing operations, as a result of which, on January 20 of this year, during the production process, wastewater containing tailings from the mine’s flotation facility spilled into the Jablanica River,” the statement said.

It is added that water sampling revealed a multiple increase in the presence of heavy metals and other substances, which also led to discoloration of the river’s watercourse.

According to the Ministry of the Interior, the suspect was brought, along with a criminal complaint, before the Basic Public Prosecutor’s Office in Lebane.
