The Justice and Reconciliation Party Rožaje has published a video of the “Mostina” landfill on the Ibar, a kind of ecological catastrophe in the region that has been polluting the environment and the Ibar River, over which it is located, for more than 20 years.
This party believes that the solution is simple and that the prerequisite for this is a change of government in Rožaje.
“This ecological catastrophe that is killing all villages downstream from the Ibar is easy to solve. For this to happen, the city needs to be taken over by a normal government that will build a recycling center from EU funds or through a public-private partnership and save the city from shame and carcinogenic poisons.” – stated representatives of the “Justice and Reconciliation Party – For Future Generations” list.
Architecture student Denis Murić launched an electronic petition last year to abolish the city landfill “Mostine” in Rožaje. He points out that this dumpsite has been endangering the health of 10,000 people in six settlements for more than two decades.
– All types of waste are disposed of at the landfill, from construction to medical waste, and then it is all burned. We have the most problems in the summer when fires occur, and from the density of the smoke, we can’t even see our houses. Also, people come from other municipalities, burn waste, and collect iron. The Ibar River, which flows beneath the landfill, is destroyed due to pollution. The villages of Besnik, Bać, Jablanica, Njeguš, Radetina, Malindubrava, and Vuča are endangered, and several thousand residents live there. Another problem is that people are suffering from lung tumors due to the harmful substances they inhale. My father died last year from a tumor, and there are more sick people in the neighborhood – Murić stated.
The interlocutor from Pobjeda says that the petition is not the first attempt to remove Rožaje’s ecological black spot. They had previously approached the competent state authorities, but did not receive an adequate response.
–Our fathers tried to solve the problem several times, but without success. The former government created a system in which, no matter who we approached, we received the answer – it’s not our jurisdiction. The current government operates according to the same pattern. When citizens previously protested due to the landfill, a story about a recycling center was initiated, but as soon as the situation calmed down a bit, that story died down as well. We are discriminated against at every step. Whatever we ask from the state or the Municipality, it takes a minimum of 20 years for something to be done. A few days ago, we sent a letter and some photos to the parliamentary committee for ecology and spatial planning, but there was no response – Murić stated.
He says that if the state’s silence continues, it is not excluded that they will stop waste disposal at the “Mostine” location.
The landfill was formed in the 1980s. At least 6,000 cubic meters of unsorted municipal waste are disposed of there annually. The director of the Rožaje utility company, Nazim Dacić, reminds that it was initially an unregulated dumpsite, and that it has had the status of a temporary site for municipal waste disposal since June 2012, based on a decision of the local parliament.
-According to the study on waste quantity assessment (done through the geodesic agency Geo-friends) from 2014, 156,000 cubic meters of garbage were deposited there, and its capacities are 339,000 cubic meters – states Dacić.
