Dijana Hrka, mother of Stefan Hrka who was killed in the collapse of a canopy, continues her hunger strike.

Hrka says she is not counting the days, that she feels well, and that she is not giving up the strike.

She commented on what Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić said last night — that he is ready to talk to her and that his conscience is clear.

“First of all, he didn’t call me directly, he called me through the media. And again — through his media. He said one sentence that really caught my ear. I’m not a university graduate, but I can see what he’s asking for and what he said. I can judge. He said, ‘She insulted me, but I will forgive her.’ I ask the president — he’s been insulting all of us for a year, he threatened to destroy us around the world, am I supposed to forgive him for what he said on Saturday — ‘some match is being played,’ for riding a train and saying he misses Toma and Vesić — what am I supposed to say to that? Should I be offended or him? I will not forgive him,” she emphasized.

She stated that she is not thinking about what motivated Vučić to call her after a year.

“Let him think about that, he’s the president, he meddles in everything. If the president is ready to talk and if he truly wants to talk, he will come here so we can speak in front of all the people, in front of all the media. If he’s afraid of chanting, that’s his problem, not mine. He gathered people he pays and still pays to be here. They are mobsters, they are criminals — and he’s the one who’s hurt, not me?” said Hrka.

She also said she would ask the president “why he is afraid of his own people, but not afraid to go out among prisoners.”

Hrka has been on a hunger strike for eight days in front of the Serbian Parliament, staying in a tent on the street and sleeping on pallets, because she was initially not allowed to approach the National Assembly building where she intended to stay. The area is secured by police, and for days SNS supporters have been gathering on the plateau.

At the moment, there is no music coming from the direction of “Čailand,” which had been continuously played in previous days.

She expressed gratitude to everyone who comes to visit and support her, as well as those spending nights in tents beside her.

Dijana Hrka began her hunger strike on November 2, after a commemorative gathering held the previous day in Novi Sad, marking the anniversary of the collapse of the canopy at the Novi Sad railway station and the deaths of 16 people.

Stefan Hrka’s mother is demanding that those responsible for the tragedy be prosecuted, that all detained students be released, and that early parliamentary elections be called.
