A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 7.7 has struck Myanmar, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

The epicenter was located 16 kilometers northwest of the Burmese city of Sagaing, near Mandalay. The quake occurred at around 2:20 PM local time. Twelve minutes later, another strong tremor followed, registering a magnitude of 6.4.

This area is approximately 100 kilometers north of the capital, Naypyidaw.

AFP journalists in Naypyidaw reported that roads cracked due to the force of the quake and pieces of ceilings fell from houses.

According to the BBC, the earthquake was also felt in China and Thailand. Videos shared on social media show people fleeing buildings in Bangkok and gathering in the streets.

The Thai government has called an emergency meeting.

Earthquakes are relatively more common in Myanmar than in Thailand.

Between 1930 and 1956, there were six strong earthquakes of magnitude 7.0 near the Sagaing Fault, which runs through the central part of the country, AFP reported, citing the U.S. Geological Survey.

Thailand is not in an earthquake-prone zone, and nearly all quakes felt in the country—though rare—originate from neighboring Myanmar.

Since buildings in Bangkok are not designed to withstand strong earthquakes, material damage could be significant.
