The protest called for by students of the State University of Novi Pazar began with incidents. Police intervened, leading to a physical confrontation in front of the Novi Pazar Basic Court building, students told N1.

Student Kemal Škrijelj confirmed to N1 that the police at one point used force against the students and that two of his colleagues were injured in the intervention, but fortunately did not sustain serious injuries.

“We gathered this morning, just as we have done before, to peacefully block the court building in Novi Pazar because we demand the release and defense from liberty for our fellow citizens who defended us and the State University of Novi Pazar.

They defended us on the day when thugs entered our faculty and violated the university’s autonomy. The police chief also entered with the thugs, thereby violating the university’s autonomy. We will remain here until our fellow citizens are released to defend themselves from liberty,” Škrijelj said.

Students Vow to Continue Protest

He reports that the police are still present in front of the court.

“At one point, they even used force on our colleagues from our university. Two colleagues were injured; the injuries are not serious, but force was used. Members of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, instead of defending us, came here to defend the people who broke into the State University and who violated the university’s autonomy,” he said.

He called on all citizens of Serbia and Novi Pazar to come to Novi Pazar “to free their fellow citizens who have been arrested.”

“We also call on all political parties of Novi Pazar and all non-governmental organizations to speak out and state their clear position on this issue,” Škrijelj added.

The situation, as he told us, is currently calm, and the students are positioned at the three entrances to the court.

“There are three sectors; behind them are members of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, and here are the students who are peacefully blocking the court. The situation is calm; we will stay until further notice, until our fellow citizens are released to defend themselves from liberty,” he said.

As the students had previously announced, the reason for the protest is that out of a total of 11, two more citizens of Novi Pazar who defended DUNP students are still in custody.

“People are in the street, exhausted from the sun and lack of sleep. The methods of protest are also on the verge of exhaustion. Because of this, the students decided to take a step forward, to organize a blockade in front of the Basic Court in Novi Pazar,” the students stated.

The blockade began at 6:00 AM.
