The Journalists’ Association of Serbia (UNS) and the Independent Journalists’ Association of Serbia (NUNS) expressed protest against the campaign led by tabloids against the responsible editor of the Children’s Program newsroom of RTS, Jelena Popadić Sumić. Because of this, a group of RTS journalists, gathered in the Naš protest (“Our Protest”) initiative, organized support for their colleague. It was announced at the protest that disciplinary proceedings have been initiated against the editor of the Children’s Program within RTS.

Employees of the public service gathered in front of RTS to show support for their colleague. It was announced at the protest that disciplinary proceedings have been initiated against the editor of the Children’s Program, Jelena Popadić Sumić, within the house.

The employees organized a rally in support of their colleague and say they will not remain silent because Jelena is one of them. She was supported by all RTS unions.

As a reminder, in the last episode of the show “Važne stvari” (“Important Things”), which is broadcast on the public service’s second program, one boy commented on the student struggle.

An excerpt from the aforementioned episode shows the boy sitting in a barber’s chair and talking about how they had a break from school due to blockades and protests. The host then asked the boy “what kind of blockades and protests those were,” to which he replied that “students are fighting for justice. For our future.”

The editor did not address the gathered crowd; she only released a balloon that read “thank you.”

She previously stated that during the production of the show, she respected the filming rules, that the children were not instructed, and that she believes in freedom of speech.

“Jelena signs off on shows that meet the highest standards; she is the creator of Plava ptica [Blue Bird]. Because of all that, we, Jelena’s colleagues, believe in her dedication and offer her our support. This kind of pressure and media lynching must be stopped,” was the message from the protest.

“Children are interested in what is happening to us, they are interested in what blockades and protests are; as parents, we are obliged to explain to them what is happening to us. Children have the right to their own opinion, for us adults to hear and understand it, they have the right not to be censored. Children have the right that their statements are not politically misused, but that’s what happens when tabloids drag them through the mud,” said an RTS journalist at the protest.
