With the Divine Liturgy in the Ascension Church, served this morning by Patriarch Porfirije, the Serbian Orthodox Church and the City of Belgrade began celebrating the city’s patron saint day, Spasovdan.

The liturgy in the Ascension Church started at 9 AM, and a large number of believers gathered today in the capital’s church to kiss the relics—the hand of Saint Sava—which arrived in Belgrade yesterday from the Mileševa monastery and will lead the traditional Spasovdan procession later today.

The ceremony celebrating the city’s patron saint day will continue at 12 PM with the breaking of the slava cake in the Old Palace, attended by the Mayor of Belgrade, Aleksandar Šapić, Patriarch Porfirije, and Prime Minister Đura Macuta.

After that, at 7 PM, the traditional Spasovdan procession will set off from the intersection of Kralja Milana and Kneza Miloša streets, led by the Patriarch.

At the head of the procession will be the hand of Saint Sava, which is the only part of the saint’s relics remaining in Serbia after their burning in Vračar on April 27, 1594.

This year, the Honorable Cross will be carried by the fisherman Renato Grbić.
