The police of Montenegro raided the Đurđevi Stupovi Monastery, near Berane, attempting to seize the monument to Duke Pavle Đurišić, Montenegrin media reported.
Podgorica’s Vijesti announced that the Berane police officers acted on a court decision to confiscate the monument to the Chetnik Duke Pavle Đurišić from the Đurđevi Stupovi Monastery, but they did not find it in the part of the premises in the monastery complex that they searched.
“The police were met by the abbot and elder of the monastery, Danilo Trpčevski, with the clergy, and he allowed the police officers to inspect the dormitory, but they did not find the monument there. The abbot contacted Metropolitan Metodije by phone, and he told the police officers that the decision should be addressed to the elder of the monastery, i.e., him, and not to the abbot, the elder of the dormitory, because only he has access to a part of the premises,” a Vijesti source from the top of the police said.
Metodije allegedly told the police that the ruling should be addressed to the head of the monastery, meaning him, and not to the abbot, the head of the dormitory, because only he has access to a part of the premises.
The police immediately informed the court about the new situation and are awaiting its reaction, the source said.
The Vijesti source said that Trpčevski apologized to the police officers who came to the scene for his posts on social networks in which he insulted the police who were in front of the monastery. Trpčevski has since deleted those posts.
The Eparchy of Budimlje-Nikšić announced at the end of September that the Đurđevi Stupovi Monastery, the seat of this eparchy, is under round-the-clock surveillance by officers of the Police Administration.
The extra-judicial panel of the Basic Court in Berane had earlier upheld the appeal of the local Basic Prosecutor’s Office for the temporary confiscation of the Đurišić memorial.
