American and Israeli media have released satellite images showing that the residence of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei was destroyed in the attack.
Satellite imagery reveals the scale of damage inflicted on the official residence of the Iranian leader in Tehran. The images show black smoke rising from the ruins of what is considered one of the most heavily guarded facilities in Iran, reported The New York Times.
According to what can be seen in the footage, several buildings within the complex were completely destroyed and collapsed as a result of precision strikes.
Israeli officials had previously stated that the targets were not limited to military infrastructure, but also included precisely targeted senior Iranian state officials — Ayatollah Khamenei and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian.
Reuters reported that following a direct strike at the heart of the complex, Khamenei was evacuated from Tehran under heavy security and taken to a secret location outside the city.
Officials told Reuters that he is safe, although his exact condition cannot currently be independently confirmed.
Photos showing damage to the complex indicate that air defense systems failed to protect one of the country’s most sensitive locations, media outlets report.
The United States and Israel carried out coordinated airstrikes on Iran early Saturday morning. At the same time, Iran was reportedly subjected to cyberattacks, with media reporting an almost complete internet blackout across the country.
