After more than a decade of broadcasting, the regional television channel Al Jazeera Balkans (AJB) is ceasing its programming. Headquartered in Sarajevo with editorial offices across the former Yugoslavia, AJB was recognized for its high-quality documentary and informative content. While official reasons have not yet been announced, it is presumed that the decision to shut down was made for financial reasons.
Al Jazeera Balkans, the Balkan outpost of the Qatari media conglomerate, is ceasing operations after 14 years, as confirmed by Klix.
Al Jazeera Balkans began broadcasting from its Sarajevo headquarters in 2011. It successfully covered the entire region, thanks to a network of editorial offices in Belgrade, Zagreb, Podgorica, Skopje, Ljubljana, and Priština.

It was the first Al Jazeera channel to broadcast in a language other than Arabic or English. Over the years, it distinguished itself with quality documentaries, investigative stories, and programs that offered deeper insights into social and political processes in the Balkans.
The television station had a presence in Sarajevo since September 2010, after taking over the local station NTV Studio 99, whose debts, amounting to 2.3 million convertible marks, it settled.
AJB DOC, an international documentary film festival, was founded in 2018 and was held annually in Sarajevo.
The official reason for the shutdown is still unknown. The Belgrade editorial office of AJB is awaiting instructions and internal announcements from Sarajevo, “Vreme” reported. As Klix announced, it is presumed that the decision was made in Doha for financial reasons.
News of Al Jazeera Balkans’ shutdown has come as a great surprise in media circles across the region. For years, the television served as an example of objective, professional, and inter-regional journalism, successfully connecting different countries and perspectives within the former Yugoslavia.
