The Croatian Parliament today adopted the Law on the construction of a center for radioactive waste management on Trgovska Gora, near the border with Bosnia and Herzegovina.

According to the National Program for the implementation of the Strategy for Radioactive Waste, Spent Sources, and Spent Nuclear Fuel Management, which the Government of Croatia adopted at the end of 2018, Trgovska Gora and the Čerkezovac barracks are foreseen as the location for the long-term storage of that waste.

Low- and medium-level radioactive waste from the Krško nuclear power plant in Slovenia would be stored at that site, as well as radioactive waste generated in Croatia.

The storage location is about 800 meters by air from the border of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and a kilometer from the water intake of the Novi Grad municipality, from which 15,000 people drink water.

Bosnian and Herzegovinian authorities oppose the opening of the radioactive waste management center, as they believe it could endanger the life and health of people in the Una river basin. They also estimate that it will endanger 13 municipalities in the northwest of BiH, where about 250,000 people live, reminds Radio Free Europe.
