Delegations from Kragujevac‘s sister cities were also present.

A “Great School Lesson,” a traditional anti-war event dedicated to the civilian victims of Kragujevac and its surroundings in 1941, was held in Kragujevac’s Šumarice.

The poem “Lessons from Memory” by Dragan Hamović was performed. Wreaths were laid at the Memorial to the Executed Students and Professors by representatives of the First Kragujevac Gymnasium, the envoy of the President of Serbia Nemanja Starović, representatives of the National Assembly of Serbia, the Constitutional Court, and the City of Kragujevac.

Respect for the innocent victims was also paid by the German Ambassador Anke Konrad and the Palestinian Ambassador Mohamed Namura, as well as delegations from the embassies of Austria, Belarus, Mexico, France, the Russian Federation, Slovakia, the United Kingdom, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Montenegro.

Delegations from Kragujevac’s sister cities were also present at the “Great School Lesson.”
Minister of Education Slavica Đukić Dejanović stated that nowhere can one learn a history lesson like in Kragujevac’s Šumarice.

She said that October 21st is a day of deepest pain, and that memories are actually overwhelmed by that emotion.

“And on the same day in 1944, Kragujevac was liberated. Kragujevac is a city of heroes, a city of pain and pride. We, the people of Kragujevac, with pride and a sense of dignity, sadly remember and send a message that Šumarice 1941 must never be repeated anywhere”, said Đukić Dejanović.

Hamović told reporters that commemorative occasions on which “we persevere and must persevere are more important to us” than, as he put it, “the souls that have long been in a bright place without sighing.”

“We still suffer various imperial challenges today, and such examples, such places help us to strengthen the impulse of survival, the defensive impulse without which we, as a people, as a community, and each individual, are nothing”, Hamović warned.

The poem “Lessons from Memory” for the “Great School Lesson” was directed by Nebojša Dugalić, and the acting ensemble consisted of, alongside Dugalić and Boris Pingović, Miloš Krstović, Saša Pilipović, Nikola Milojević, Dragan Stokić, Avram Cvetković, Nađa Jakovljević, Ana Todorović, Aleksandar Petković, and David Pilipović.

The composers were Kalin Dugalić and Jana Dugalić, the conductor was Milan Nedeljković, and the costume designer was Jelena Janjatović.
