The European Union today condemned the unilateral actions of the Kosovo authorities against public services in the north of Kosovo and called on them to stop these actions, to show restraint, and to avoid measures that contribute to the escalation of tensions.

After the Kosovo police entered the water supply facility in Zubin Potok and the building of the branch of the Serbian National Employment Service in North Mitrovica, the EU spokesperson stated that “unilateral and uncoordinated actions undermine efforts to build trust between communities.”

“Recent operations by Kosovo police, searches and closures of public services in Kosovo could increase tensions, negatively affect the daily lives of local communities and undermine Kosovo’s international standing. We call on outgoing Prime Minister Albin Kurti and the Kosovo authorities to stop these closures, to show restraint and to avoid escalatory measures,” the EU spokesperson said in a written statement. It added that the EU is “particularly concerned” about operations targeting the Ibar Water Company in North Mitrovica and the water supply and public utility company in Zubin Potok, which provide essential public services to communities living in the north of Kosovo.

Kosovo police today blocked the entrance to the building of the branch of the Serbian National Employment Service in North Mitrovica and removed the signs with names above the entrance to the building and the Serbian flag. Yesterday, Kosovo police entered the water supply facility in Zubin Potok and conducted a search, and before that, they closed the premises of the Institution for Sports, Youth and Specialized Services in North Mitrovica.

The EU spokesperson also stated that both Kosovo and Serbia are called upon to engage constructively, without further delay or preconditions, in the implementation of the Agreement on the Road to Normalization and its Implementation Annex, as well as other agreements reached in the dialogue under the auspices of the EU.

“This includes the establishment of the Association of Serb-majority Municipalities. The normalization of relations is a key condition on the European path for both sides,” the EU spokesperson’s statement said.
