The economic situation in Bavaria (a federal state in Germany) is becoming increasingly difficult. Bertram Brossardt, Director General of the Bavarian Employers’ Association (vbw), warned of serious job losses and proposed radical measures to stop the decline in competitiveness.
Brossardt predicts that this year another 20,000 jobs will disappear in Bavarian industry, especially in the metal and electrical sectors, after the same number was lost last year as well. “The pressure on our location has become too strong. Unemployment among engineers is rising, something we have not experienced until now,” he emphasized.
Proposal: less vacation, more work
In order to increase productivity and pull the economy out of stagnation, employers support the initiative of Prime Minister Markus Söder to boost work performance. Since there is strong resistance to abolishing church holidays, Brossardt proposes other options:
- Abolishing one day of annual leave.
- Increasing weekly working hours (Söder’s proposal of an additional hour of work per week).
Brossardt notes that such proposals interfere with collective agreements and must be negotiated, but stresses: “It is important that something gets started at all.”
