Marko Kri\u010dak, head of the Criminal Police Directorate (UKP), was arrested this morning on the orders of the Higher Public Prosecutor\u2019s Office (VJT) in Belgrade on suspicion of abuse of office, following a criminal complaint filed by the lawyer representing Veselin Mili\u0107, the deputy director of police, Radar reports.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The same complaint also led to the detention of Bo\u0161ko Sekulovi\u0107, head of the Department for the Suppression of Crime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kri\u010dak led the police operation following the murder of Aleksandar Ne\u0161ovi\u0107, known as Baja, at the \u201c27\u201d restaurant in Senjak, where Veselin Mili\u0107 was initially named in the police criminal complaint in connection with the crime. At the time, Mili\u0107 was not only an assistant director but also head of the Belgrade police.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now Kri\u010dak<\/a> is suspected of falsifying evidence in the case and putting pressure on witnesses and defendants to make them adjust the facts to an already established version of events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Radar reported on the complaint filed by Mili\u0107\u2019s lawyers on July 30, 2026, against Kri\u010dak and Bo\u0161ko Sekulovi\u0107 in an article entitled \u201cMili\u0107 Accuses UKP Chiefs of Framing Him for the Senjak Crime.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kri\u010dak\u2019s brief tenure at the helm of the UKP<\/a>, which began toward the end of last year, will not be remembered as much as the fact that he became the first head of this most important police department to be arrested. The meteoric rise of this former car dealer within the security services began during the second half of what is now the former Aleksandar Vu\u010di\u0107 regime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Following what had by then become established practice, Kri\u010dak first worked at the Security Intelligence Agency (BIA), as a member of its Fifth Directorate for counterintelligence protection of agency personnel, or, more simply put, the \u201cpolice within the police.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From there, he moved to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, as it was believed he had gained experience there when Mili\u0107, who had first served as head of the Belgrade police from September 2013 to August 2018, was appointed to the position again in 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kri\u010dak then returned to the BIA<\/a>. However, in 2022, he was once again appointed to a police position, becoming deputy commander of the Unit for the Protection of Certain Persons and Facilities (JZO). In July 2023, he was appointed commander of the unit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Marko Kri\u010dak\u2019s name became widely known only after the student protests, when he and the JZO unit he led attracted attention for their brutality. The most notorious incident occurred when they detained several demonstrators inside the Serbian Government building, an incident about which numerous accounts were given.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Among others, student Nikolina Sin\u0111eli\u0107 publicly accused him not only of brutality but also of threatening to rape her. He was appointed head of the UKP toward the end of last year despite widespread opposition from experts and members of the very department whose officers have now arrested him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kri\u010dak has also faced allegations of violence in connection with the investigation into the murder at the \u201c27\u201d restaurant. Four suspects claimed they had been beaten by police officers, while the accused owner of the establishment stated in his testimony that Marko Kri\u010dak was among those who had assaulted him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Aleksandar Vu\u010di\u0107 has publicly praised this police lieutenant colonel on several occasions. The election winners, representatives of the Student List, recently demanded the resignations of several officials, including Lieutenant Colonel Kri\u010dak himself. He did not resign, but his own subordinates have now arrested him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
