The \u201cBest New Serbian Word\u201d competition, now in its fourth year, continues to show that the Serbian language is a living space in which we know how to recognize ourselves, name things, and interpret the times we live in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In 2026, the public chose an unusual word as the best one, a word that precisely captures the present moment: Studentoslovlje.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The person who proposed it explained: \u201cStudentoslovlje is a long-lasting class about solidarity, democracy, perseverance, and a willingness to make great sacrifices for higher goals, a class that students are teaching to society as a whole.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Studentoslovlje does not stand alone. It continues a series that has been taking shape through this competition for several years, like a linguistic diary of our shared existence. The first winning word, Duhoklonu\u0107e (2023), named a state of spiritual decline. Rasanica (2024) brought awakening and emergence from a state of slumber, while Bezre\u010dica (2025) described the moment when we are left without an answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This year, the expert jury awarded first prize to the word Zastarelica, a native Serbian alternative to the word \u201carchaism.\u201d The word was proposed by Janko Vu\u010dini\u0107 from Belgrade, who was an eighth-grade elementary school student in May. He came up with it during a municipal Serbian-language competition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The other words recognized by the jury were Razdanica (second prize) and Razgrabica (third prize).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
