{"id":220412,"date":"2026-10-24T14:30:07","date_gmt":"2026-10-24T12:30:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/serbiantimes.info\/en\/?p=220412"},"modified":"2026-10-24T14:30:08","modified_gmt":"2026-10-24T12:30:08","slug":"growing-pressure-on-investigative-journalism-nuns-president-bodrozic-speaks-about-threats-against-radar-journalists","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/serbiantimes.info\/en\/growing-pressure-on-investigative-journalism-nuns-president-bodrozic-speaks-about-threats-against-radar-journalists\/","title":{"rendered":"GROWING PRESSURE ON INVESTIGATIVE JOURNALISM: NUNS President Bodro\u017ei\u0107 speaks about threats against RADAR journalists!"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Threats against Radar journalists Vuk Cviji\u0107 and Milan Radonji\u0107, which this time also targeted their children, have once again raised questions about the safety of investigative journalists in Serbia. \u017deljko Bodro\u017ei\u0107, president of the Independent Journalists\u2019 Association of Serbia (NUNS), warned on N1\u2019s \u201cCrvena linija\u201d program that journalists who expose corruption and crime are particularly vulnerable, and that in a country where institutions are not fully performing their duties, threats and pressure can easily escalate into something far more serious.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For years, the database of attacks and pressure on journalists maintained by the Independent Journalists\u2019 Association of Serbia (NUNS) has served as a source of information for international institutions and organizations about the state of journalists\u2019 safety in Serbia, Bodro\u017ei\u0107 says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to him, the number of attacks and instances of pressure has increased year after year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe situation has become more complicated over the past two years because Serbia has been going through a turbulent period for a long time. Because of the street protests, many journalists have become targets of both powerful politicians and various influential figures, all the way up to criminal bosses,\u201d Bodro\u017ei\u0107 said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Speaking about the attacks on Radar journalists Vuk Cviji\u0107 and Milan Radonji\u0107, he also stressed that journalists who conduct investigative reporting and expose corruption and crime are particularly at risk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIn a country where institutions are not fully carrying out their duties, such threats and such pressure can easily escalate into something even worse,\u201d Bodro\u017ei\u0107 believes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He added that they frequently warn public officials, who wield power and constantly appear in the most influential media outlets, that they must be careful about their rhetoric. As he pointed out, many attacks appear to follow the public targeting and criminalization of journalists and media workers by officials, who are, in a sense, \u201cthe main generators of hatred toward journalists.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-wp-embed is-provider-serbiantimes-info wp-block-embed-serbiantimes-info\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"jkCsLQBgbv\"><a href=\"https:\/\/serbiantimes.info\/visak-i-manjak-listica-zamenjeni-dzakovi-problemi-sa-izbornim-materijalom-u-pcinjskom-okrugu\/\">VI\u0160AK I MANJAK LISTI\u0106A, ZAMENJENI D\u017dAKOVI: Problemi sa izbornim materijalom u P\u010dinjskom okrugu!<\/a><\/blockquote><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; visibility: hidden;\" title=\"\u201eVI\u0160AK I MANJAK LISTI\u0106A, ZAMENJENI D\u017dAKOVI: Problemi sa izbornim materijalom u P\u010dinjskom okrugu!\u201c \u2014 Serbiantimes.info\" src=\"https:\/\/serbiantimes.info\/visak-i-manjak-listica-zamenjeni-dzakovi-problemi-sa-izbornim-materijalom-u-pcinjskom-okrugu\/embed\/#?secret=w4R5MPhRo6#?secret=jkCsLQBgbv\" data-secret=\"jkCsLQBgbv\" width=\"500\" height=\"282\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u201cThe public as the only defense\u201d<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In many cases involving attacks on journalists, the public is their only defense, he stressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He also said that the Permanent Working Group for the Safety of Journalists has existed for ten years, bringing together representatives of media and journalists\u2019 associations, as well as representatives of the Ministry of the Interior and the prosecution service. Initially, he said, both the police and prosecutors had been willing to resolve cases, since the most important thing in such situations is to respond quickly and for state authorities to take steps to protect the journalist who has been attacked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIn many cases, we have seen that when pressure comes from outside, primarily from the European Union, our institutions are capable of doing their job effectively and quickly. But because many cases also involve incitement by people holding senior political positions, state authorities are automatically reluctant when it comes to resolving them. We have many reports that never result in court proceedings, and the number of unresolved attacks on journalists keeps growing,\u201d the NUNS president explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Support for the Nova.rs newsroom \u2014 how powerful a newsroom can be when it stands together<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Over the past period, protests in support of the Nova.rs news portal have been organized outside its newsroom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat is happening in Serbia is an attack on the media outlets formerly owned by United Group, which have acquired a new owner. The changes announced by the new owners, some of which they have already begun implementing, first prompted a reaction from journalists\u2019 and media associations here in Serbia. Later, colleagues and associations from across the region joined our initiative. In September alone, the Independent Journalists\u2019 Association of Serbia <a href=\"https:\/\/serbiantimes.info\/tag\/nuns\/\">(NUNS)<\/a> recorded 24 incidents, while the <a href=\"https:\/\/serbiantimes.info\/tag\/slavko-curuvija\/\">Slavko \u0106uruvija<\/a> Foundation documented more than 100 verbal attacks and instances of pressure by state officials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Journalist Danica Vu\u010deni\u0107 received a threatening letter addressed to her and her family. In June, the car of David Gruhonji\u0107, son of professor and journalist Dinko Gruhonji\u0107, was vandalized in Novi Sad following a new series of incidents in which targets were painted on his father.
