A session of the Belgrade City Assembly, which was supposed to consider the opposition\u2019s proposal to remove Belgrade Mayor<\/em><\/strong> Aleksandar \u0160api\u0107<\/a>, was not held because councilors from the ruling majority failed to secure a quorum.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

City Assembly President Nikola Nikodijevi\u0107 said at the start of the session that 47 of the 110 councilors were present in the chamber.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nikodijevi\u0107 scheduled the continuation of the session for November 23 at 10 a.m.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On October 7, opposition councilors submitted a request to convene an extraordinary session of the Belgrade City Assembly, proposing \u0160api\u0107\u2019s removal following an incident in which he physically attacked Tatjana Mi\u0107i\u0107, a councilor from the Kreni-Promeni movement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The request was signed by 41 councilors \u2014 21 from the Kreni-Promeni movement, along with representatives of the Green-Left Front, the Movement of Free Citizens, the Democratic Party, the People\u2019s Movement of Serbia, New Face of Serbia, the \u201cWe \u2014 Voice from the People\u201d movement and the Environmental Uprising movement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kreni-Promeni President Savo Manojlovi\u0107 said ahead of today\u2019s session that whether the assembly majority votes to remove \u0160api\u0107 depends on Aleksandar Vu\u010di\u0107\u2019s political courage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhether the assembly majority will make a farce out of securing or withholding a quorum is up to them, and they will have to answer for it. Whether the assembly majority votes to remove Aleksandar \u0160api\u0107 depends on Aleksandar Vu\u010di\u0107\u2019s political courage, and that is not up to us. Whether they will have the courage to vote for his removal or try to force him to resign is also up to them,\u201d Manojlovi\u0107 said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Manojlovi\u0107 also said that \u0160api\u0107 had two pistols on him during the confrontation with Tatjana Mi\u0107i\u0107 and that, even if he has a permit to carry firearms, the law does not allow him to carry two weapons at the same time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a reminder, Tatjana Mi\u0107i\u0107, a Kreni-Promeni councilor in the city parliament, was injured on the evening of September 28 and was diagnosed with a fracture of the left nasal bone. She told N1 that same evening that she had encountered \u0160api\u0107 while walking in the Be\u017eanijska Kosa neighborhood and that, following a verbal argument, he struck her on the nose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At a press conference the following day, \u0160api\u0107 denied hitting Mi\u0107i\u0107, claiming instead that he had merely pushed her away when her husband moved toward him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Kreni-Promeni movement soon responded to the mayor\u2019s statement by publishing a video on social media showing him striking Tatjana Mi\u0107i\u0107 while she was recording their argument on her phone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
