On this day, September 20, 1914, Austro-Hungarian authorities executed<\/em><\/strong> 15 men and women in Zemun<\/a><\/em><\/strong> who had welcomed and supported the Serbian army during its brief entry into the city in the first months of<\/em><\/strong> World War I<\/a>. The event is documented by records from the Historical Archives of Belgrade cited in the work of historian Olga Manojlovi\u0107 Pintar.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Everything took place during fierce fighting between Serbia and Austria-Hungary<\/a>. Following the Serbian army\u2019s victory at Cer, an offensive across the Sava and Drina rivers was launched in early September under pressure from the Allies. Units of the Defense of Belgrade entered Zemun, which was then part of Austria-Hungary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Part of Zemun\u2019s population greeted the arrival of the Serbian army<\/a> with enthusiasm. During its brief presence, the names of several central streets were changed \u2014 Glavna Street was renamed after King Petar, Gospodska after Prince \u0110or\u0111e, and Be\u017eanijska after General \u017divkovi\u0107. According to historical sources, General Mihailo \u017divkovi\u0107 and Prince \u0110or\u0111e Kara\u0111or\u0111evi\u0107 visited the city on September 13.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, the Serbian army soon withdrew, and on September 14, Austro-Hungarian authorities re-established control over Zemun. Strict measures of surveillance and punishment followed against residents who had cooperated with or supported Serbian forces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Just six days later, on September 20, 15 residents of Zemun were executed. They were not all men \u2014 three women were also among those killed: Draga Nikoli\u0107, Danica Filipovi\u0107 and Milka Koprevnica. The victims included a baker, bagpiper, carpenter\u2019s assistant, day laborer, greengrocer, coachman, farmers, a factory worker and a merchant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The historical record lists the names of all 15 victims: \u0110ura Alagi\u0107, Laza Erdeljan, Draga and Du\u0161an Nikoli\u0107, Pero Vuleti\u0107, Stevan Gudovi\u0107, Danica Filipovi\u0107, Mi\u0161a Vioglavi\u0107, Sava and Ilija Ivkovi\u0107, Milka Koprevnica, Lazar and Petar Stri\u010devi\u0107, Staja Diamatovi\u0107 and Svetislav Diamatovi\u0107.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Their remains were exhumed on March 30, 1917, while documentation about the victims is preserved in the Historical Archives of Belgrade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The events in Zemun took place while some of the fiercest battles of the first year of the war were being fought on another part of the front. It was precisely from September 19 to 22, 1914, that the bloody Battle of Ma\u010dkov Kamen was fought between the Serbian and Austro-Hungarian armies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
