It has been 33 years since Serbian civilians were killed in the village of<\/em><\/strong> Mirlovi\u0107 Polje<\/a><\/em><\/strong> near Drni\u0161, where seven residents, mostly elderly people, were killed on September 6, 1993. The Documentation and Information Center \u201cVeritas\u201d said that no one has been prosecuted for this crime to this day.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to \u201cVeritas,\u201d in the early morning hours, a sabotage-terrorist group belonging to the Croatian Army entered the village. At the time, Mirlovi\u0107 Polje was under UN protection and under the control of the authorities of the Republic of Serbian Krajina.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the report, the village had a mixed Croatian-Serbian population before the war, but because of its proximity to the front line, most residents had previously fled, leaving mainly elderly Serbian residents behind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Among them were married couple Marija Trzin, born in 1928, and Ilija Trzin, as well as their neighbor Ljubica Trzin, born in 1938. According to the statement, they went out that morning to graze their sheep.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After artillery shelling of the village began, they took shelter in the basement of a house. When they heard crying, they headed toward the door, and, according to \u201cVeritas,\u201d a Croatian soldier then threw a hand grenade<\/a> into the basement. Ljubica was killed, while Marija was seriously wounded. Marija was found only in the evening by Serbian soldiers and taken to the Knin hospital, which saved her life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The following day, a team from the Civil Protection of the RSK arrived in the village accompanied by members of the UN Civilian Police (UNCIVPOL) to clear the area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition to Ljubica Trzin\u2019s body, the remains of six more civilians<\/a> were found. The charred remains of Milan Bibi\u0107 and his wife Vasilija were found in the ruins of family homes, while the bodies of Bo\u017eo Bibi\u0107, his wife Bo\u017eica and Marta \u0160arac were found nearby. According to the statement, the body of another resident, Ljubica Trzin, daughter of Petar, was still burning in the ruins of her house.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All the victims were buried that same day in the local cemetery without autopsies, \u201cVeritas\u201d states. Around ten days later, on the orders of the investigating judge of the District Court in Knin, an exhumation and forensic medical examination were carried out, attended by a UN military observer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cTHE CASE HAS BEEN PENDING FOR DECADES AGAINST UNKNOWN PERPETRATORS\u201d<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

\u201cVeritas\u201d states that the attack on Mirlovi\u0107 Polje was carried out by the Ninth Battalion \u201cRafael Vitez Boban,\u201d known as the \u201cBobanovci,\u201d which at the time operated as part of the 114th Brigade of the Croatian Army.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to their claims, the unit was commanded by Marko Skejo from Ru\u017ei\u0107i near Drni\u0161.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The DIC \u201cVeritas\u201d claims that as early as November 2011, it submitted complete documentation on the case to the War Crimes Prosecutor\u2019s Office of the Republic of Serbia. After a preliminary investigation was conducted, the case was transferred to the State Attorney\u2019s Office of the Republic of Croatia (DORH).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cVeritas\u201d claims that, despite the submitted documentation, testimonies, medical findings, and the identification of the unit and its command staff, the case is still formally being handled by the Croatian judiciary \u201cagainst unknown perpetrators.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSuch a practice clearly indicates deliberate obstruction and Croatia\u2019s unwillingness to prosecute<\/strong> war crimes<\/a><\/strong> when the victims are Serbs,\u201d<\/strong> the DIC \u201cVeritas\u201d statement reads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the 1991 census, 188 Serbian citizens lived in Mirlovi\u0107 Polje. \u201cVeritas\u201d states that as of September 2026, there are no longer any Serbs living in the village.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The crime committed on September 6, 1993, therefore remains, 33 years later, without a judicial resolution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
