President of the Constitutional Court of Serbia Vladan Petrov<\/a>said that students in the blockade were not spied on, but that they may have been unlawfully wiretapped, while expressing doubt that the Serbian state was behind it.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Students in the blockade announced this week that it had been established that at least 14 students and members of the opposition had been targeted by advanced types of spyware, at least since the beginning of 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For the president of the Constitutional Court, however, this does not constitute spying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWell, that is not spying; you spy on a state. You can spy on, for example, the Constitutional Court, the president of the Constitutional Court, the president of the Republic, certain sectors of the state, and so on. This could be some unauthorized recording, potentially eavesdropping, and so on. If any of that happened at all,\u201d Petrov told TV Pink.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Security Intelligence Agency (BIA) also issued a statement yesterday regarding the students\u2019 claims, saying that it was \u201cordinary trivial sensationalism,\u201d and the president of the Constitutional Court is more inclined to believe that explanation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt is possible that someone was eavesdropping on them, but who says that the Serbian state was eavesdropping on them? That can only be established in court proceedings,\u201d he said on Pink.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said that he was \u201ca man of the state\u201d and that, therefore, he was always prepared to believe what is stated and declared by official institutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI am the first to assume that various people are probably listening to me\u201d<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Vladan Petrov further downplayed the entire case by saying that those involved in political life must also be prepared for the possibility that someone is eavesdropping on them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIf those students in the blockade thought that absolutely no one was listening to them, that is the same as when we, those of us in important functions and positions, think that no one is listening to us. Well, I am the first to assume that various people are probably listening to me,\u201d Petrov said, adding:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNow, you know how it is, if you have nothing in particular to hide, especially in terms of violent actions, behavior that has criminal-law consequences, and so on, why would you worry about whether someone is eavesdropping on you or not.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He emphasized, however, that there is a right to human dignity that anyone can invoke, and that unauthorized recording is a criminal offense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI do not dispute that at all, under any circumstances, but simply, when you enter public life in any way, and you are one of the best witnesses to that (he addresses the Pink presenter, N1 note), you have to be prepared to be, how should I put it, available, both willingly and unwillingly, to different segments of the public, both those who love you and, even more so, those who cannot stand the sight of you. Especially if you want to go into politics, you have to be prepared for that,\u201d Petrov said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why Petrov believes the upcoming elections are historically important<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Petrov also said that he was opposed to creating tensions ahead of the snap parliamentary elections expected on October 25, which, in his assessment, are \u201chistorically important.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThey are historically important primarily because we have never had, at least in our recent history, and I would say in our more distant history as well, such a situation \u2013 that for almost two years there has been so much irregularity, from almost constant blockades, to the fact that in some segments, important segments of life, decisions have been made by certain plenums, about which we know some things today, but still know much more that we do not know,\u201d Petrov said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The president of the Constitutional Court said that the next elections must be a victory for parliamentary, above all party-based, democracy and \u201ca normal, decent Serbia,\u201d emphasizing that by this he did not mean that it must be a victory for the ruling party or any coalition, but rather for all political entities that are prepared to enter a relatively fair electoral contest and, afterward, accept the election results established by the official competent authorities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
