The United States Mint began selling a new one-dollar coin featuring President<\/em><\/strong> Donald Trump<\/a><\/em><\/strong> today.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This marks the first time since 1866 that the likeness of a living person has become part of U.S. currency<\/a> in circulation, Politico reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The coin was issued to mark the 250th anniversary of U.S. independence and is being sold in packs of 25 and bags containing 100 coins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The price of a pack ranges from $61 to $154.50 (approximately \u20ac52 to \u20ac132), which is significantly higher than the coin\u2019s face value.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The obverse of the coin features the inscriptions \u201cLIBERTY\u201d and \u201cIN GOD WE TRUST,\u201d while the reverse displays the presidential seal with the number \u201c250\u201d inscribed on the shield.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The coins were minted in Philadelphia, have the characteristics of coins intended for circulation and are legal tender, although according to Mint data, they have not yet been released into general circulation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They are made from an alloy of copper, zinc, manganese and nickel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The issuance of a coin bearing Trump\u2019s likeness has sparked controversy due to the longstanding American tradition of not featuring living individuals on U.S. currency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Opponents of the move say the decision contradicts rules restricting the depiction of living people on U.S. coins, while supporters point to a special law providing for the issuance of coins to mark the 250th anniversary of the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent previously announced that the coin would be issued as part of the anniversary celebrations, while the United States Mint says its design is intended to commemorate 250 years of American history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Collectors are paying particular attention to the 250,000 coins minted on July 4 that bear a special \u201cJuly 4th\u201d mark.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Those specimens were randomly included in the packages sold through the United States Mint.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The new coin is part of the program marking the 250th anniversary of American independence, and the United States Mint says it will also be available through its sales channels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The appearance of Trump\u2019s likeness on U.S. currency represents an unusual precedent in American numismatic history and has already raised questions about the limits of presidential representation on the nation\u2019s currency, Politico reports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The American outlet recalls that in 1866, Congress prohibited the likeness of any living person from appearing on banknotes or bonds after the image of a Treasury Department official appeared on a five-cent note.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2020, Trump signed a law allowing the issuance of a one-dollar coin with a design symbolizing the 250th anniversary of the United States in 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
