Actor and singer Milan Vasi\u0107 said today that, before performing at the feast day celebration of the Holy Archangels Monastery near Prizren, he was called in for questioning by members of the Kosovo Police, who, he said, warned him which songs he was not allowed to perform. Just before going on stage, he also noticed the presence of snipers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Metal barriers, thorough searches of worshippers and their bags, turning away those whom members of the so-called Kosovo Police believed were carrying disputed symbols, as well as checks of the performer’s repertoire, marked this year’s feast day celebration at the Holy Archangels Monastery near Prizren.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Vasi\u0107, who performed at the monastery’s celebration, told Radio Television of Serbia (RTS) that he has been involved in humanitarian and cultural activities in Kosovo and Metohija for the past five years, but had never encountered a situation like this before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He said his greatest concern was for his family, who had come to Prizren with him for the first time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“I wasn’t so much afraid for myself, but because my entire family came with me for the first time\u2014my mother, sisters, nephews, wife, and my son, who turned one year old today,” Vasi\u0107 said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Upon arriving at the monastery, he said, his vehicle was searched, after which he was called in to speak with police officers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“They called me in for an informational interview with the commander and another five or six police officers. They asked me what I was doing, what I was going to sing, what I was allowed to sing, and what I was not allowed to sing,” Vasi\u0107 recounted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to him, he was also handed a document outlining the rules of conduct.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“They told me that I was not allowed to sing any song that mentions Metohija,” Vasi\u0107 said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Vasi\u0107 stressed that he explained his performance was not political, but dedicated to tradition and faith.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“I don’t deal with politics. I am dedicated to preserving tradition and faith,” Vasi\u0107 said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He added that he removed certain songs from the setlist so the concert could take place without incident.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“My goal that day was not to show how great a Serb I am. I am an Orthodox Christian and a Serb simply by being there and by gathering a record number of people,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“At one point I asked the commander, after they had told me everything they had to say\u2014excuse me, am I even allowed to sing today? He replied that this is the procedure: if you mention that or say that, then we intervene,” Vasi\u0107 recounted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
One of the most striking moments, according to him, was when he noticed police officers with sniper rifles just before taking the stage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“As I was singing, the snipers were positioned across from me,” Vasi\u0107 said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Nevertheless, he said the most important thing was that the event passed peacefully.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“I think we succeeded and prevailed because there wasn’t a single incident,” Vasi\u0107 said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He particularly emphasized that people from different parts of the region attended the celebration\u2014from Slovenia, Croatia, Republika Srpska, Montenegro, North Macedonia, and Serbia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
