Well-known actor Nikola \u0110uri\u010dko said on the program If I Were Someone<\/em> hosted by Rada \u0110uri\u0107 that Serbia as a society \u201cshows no capacity whatsoever for a republic\u201d and that a serious debate should be opened about restoring the Kingdom of Serbia. During the interview, he also spoke about the Novi Sad railway station canopy collapse, student and civic protests, the state of society, and the need for a debate on what kind of country citizens actually want.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u0110uri\u010dko believes the root of the problem is that the citizens of Serbia fundamentally do not understand the republican system of government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI think our society does not understand the republic at all. When you look at it, you’ll see it in the songs we sing, the way we behave… We do not understand the republic as an option. I think that once we start talking about what kind of Serbia we actually want, these people will fall away like a scab. And I think we should, for example, debate whether we should restore the Kingdom of Serbia. I think our society has a strong inclination toward that. We need a father figure, we need some kind of unifying event,\u201d the actor said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

He also pointed to what he sees as paradoxes in the country’s national symbols, noting that Serbia sings a royal anthem while simply skipping the king.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe have a crown on our flag, yet we are a republic. Either remove the crown, my brother, and let’s make a proper flag and sing Dositej’s song as we should, so that we can truly be a republic. And let’s try to agree on what that republic actually is, to talk to one another about what the Republic of Serbia would mean. Not just a republic left over after Montenegro, so now it’s the Republic of Serbia, but what that Republic of Serbia would actually be. But if we can’t do that\u2014and I would say we can’t\u2014then let’s be a kingdom,\u201d \u0110uri\u010dko said, adding that people in Serbia love the flag and the Nemanji\u0107 dynasty.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n
