Many details surrounding the arrest, trial, and death of Dragoljub Mihailovi\u0107 remain shrouded in mystery to this day, while his life and legacy continue to spark numerous debates and controversies. However, some of what the general said in his own defense has been preserved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The official name of the proceedings against the commander of the Yugoslav Army in the Homeland was <strong>&#8220;The Trial of Dragoljub-Dra\u017ea Mihailovi\u0107 and Other Collaborators for Treason and War Crimes Committed in the Territory of Yugoslavia During the War (1941\u20131945),&#8221;<\/strong> though today it is far better known as the <strong>Belgrade Trial<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The trial was held in Belgrade from June 10 to July 15, 1946. It was open to the public and attended by around 60 foreign correspondents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"http:\/\/serbiantimes.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/serbia-440021.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"751\" height=\"1024\" src=\"http:\/\/serbiantimes.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/07\/serbia-440021-751x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-214569\" srcset=\"https:\/\/serbiantimes.info\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/07\/serbia-440021-751x1024.jpg 751w, https:\/\/serbiantimes.info\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/07\/serbia-440021-220x300.jpg 220w, https:\/\/serbiantimes.info\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/07\/serbia-440021-768x1047.jpg 768w, https:\/\/serbiantimes.info\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/07\/serbia-440021.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 751px) 100vw, 751px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dragoljub Dra\u017ea Mihailovi\u0107 was tried before a military court presided over by Colonel Mihailo \u0110or\u0111evi\u0107, with Lieutenant Colonels Milija Lakovi\u0107 and Mihailo Jankovi\u0107 serving as members of the panel. The associate judges were Nikola Stankovi\u0107, Radomir Ili\u0107, and Todor Popadi\u0107 (secretary). The prosecution was led by Colonel Milo\u0161 Mini\u0107, assisted by Milo\u0161 Jovanovi\u0107.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mihailovi\u0107 was charged on 47 counts and was tried for actions against the Partisans, collaboration with the Germans, and war crimes against civilians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The course of the trial remains the subject of disputes and controversy to this day. The court rejected every proposal submitted by the defense. Allied airmen who had been rescued and evacuated with the help of the Chetniks in 1944 were not allowed to testify in Mihailovi\u0107&#8217;s favor, with the explanation that their testimony was irrelevant. It was a professional soldier delivering his report, compelling precisely because of its simplicity,&#8221; the correspondent wrote.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some of what Dragoljub Mihailovi\u0107 said in his defense has nevertheless been preserved, with the words he delivered at the very end of the trial being the most frequently quoted:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;I remained a soldier convinced that the people should have the final say. I am convinced that I was on the right path. I called upon journalists from around the world and requested a mission from the Red Army. Fate was merciless to me when it cast me into the fiercest storms. The reading of the verdict began at 8:15 a.m. on July 15. Out of the 47 counts in the indictment, General Mihailovi\u0107 was convicted on eight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dragoljub Mihailovi\u0107 was sentenced to death by firing squad, permanent loss of political and civil rights, and confiscation of all his property.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most historians regard July 17, 1946, as the date of Dragoljub Mihailovi\u0107&#8217;s death. The location of his execution remains unknown, although Ada Ciganlija is considered the most likely site. The exact location of General Mihailovi\u0107&#8217;s grave is still unknown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On May 14, 2015, the Higher Court in Belgrade rehabilitated him. The court determined that Mihailovi\u0107 had not received a fair trial.
