Former Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has been placed under house arrest under the supervision of the intelligence branch of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), after Iranian authorities uncovered a significant portion of his contacts with Israel, The New York Times<\/em> reported on Monday, citing four senior Iranian officials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the newspaper’s extensive investigation, Israel had for years carried out a covert operation aimed at recruiting Ahmadinejad as an intelligence source, and later allegedly considered the possibility of installing him as Iran’s leader following the potential overthrow of the current regime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the report, one of the more unusual phases of the operation took place in early 2024, when a senior Hungarian government official asked Gergely Deli, rector of the Ludovika University of Public Service in Budapest, to invite Ahmadinejad to a climate change conference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Deli said he was told that the conference would actually serve as a cover for secret talks between Ahmadinejad and Israeli intelligence officials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although he was concerned about the potential damage to his own reputation and that of the university, Deli agreed to send the invitation to Ahmadinejad because he believed that “if two enemies are willing to talk, they should be given the opportunity to do so.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
