Catalan police have finally managed to identify the man who was executed around 10 a.m. on June 10 on Balmes Street in Barcelona and, according to Spanish media reports, he was a Serbian national wanted under an international arrest warrant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to journalist Ana Puns\u00ed, the victim was a young Serbian citizen who was the subject of a European Arrest Warrant issued by Belgian authorities. Catalan police have officially named the criminal investigation “Cas Diamant,” which translates as “Diamond Case.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\n“Identifying the body was one of the biggest challenges for the Criminal Investigation Division (DIC) of the Mossos d’Esquadra. The young Serbian moved around the Catalan capital using multiple identities and high-quality forged passports, which initially misled investigators and delayed confirmation of his true identity,” Spanish media reported, citing senior Catalan police sources.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n
Since the slain Serbian was carrying several forged documents from different countries, Spanish authorities sent his fingerprints and DNA samples through Interpol and Europol channels to compare them with records in international databases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\n“His identity was definitively established on June 12, after his fingerprints and DNA profile were run through Europol’s database, which revealed an active red notice issued by Belgium,” media reports stated, explaining why Belgian authorities had been searching for the Serbian national hiding in Barcelona.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n
\n“Belgian authorities issued a European Arrest Warrant for the Serbian citizen because he was identified as a high-ranking member of a criminal organization involved in importing and distributing large quantities of cocaine through the Port of Antwerp. In addition to drug trafficking, Belgian prosecutors accuse him of participation in an organized criminal group and laundering millions of euros obtained from narcotics sales across Western Europe,” Spanish media reported, citing the latest details of the investigation into the brutal mafia-style killing in Barcelona.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n
As a reminder, confusion surrounding the victim’s identity arose because the murdered man possessed personal documents bearing several different identities. Investigators initially suspected the victim was a man from the Balkans and that the murder was connected to the ongoing feud between the Kava\u010d and \u0160kaljari criminal clans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\n“That conclusion was suggested by the manner in which the murder was carried out, as it matches the modus operandi of Balkan criminal groups. Furthermore, just three days earlier, on June 7, Belgrade native Mario \u0110olovi\u0107 (40) was killed in Barcelona in an almost identical fashion. However, the situation became more complicated when Catalan investigators received information that the victim might be the biological brother of a well-known football player from Ireland. They were led to that theory because his family reported him missing on the day of the murder after he had traveled to Barcelona. The Irish footballer’s brother is also allegedly connected to an Irish criminal clan that cooperates with the Kava\u010d clan,” a source explained.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

\n“However, a dramatic twist soon followed. It turned out that the murdered man was not the footballer’s brother and that this case had nothing to do with his disappearance. The search for that young man is still ongoing.”<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n
According to investigators, the killer approached the victim from behind on the morning of June 10 and fired a shot into the back of his head before fleeing the scene. Surveillance cameras captured the suspected assassin, who notably made no effort to conceal his face.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\n“Security cameras recorded the killer’s face and police are actively searching for him. During the crime scene investigation, officers discovered a bicycle helmet, a handgun, and a mobile phone in a trash container, items believed to have been discarded by the killer after the crime. Fingerprints and biological evidence were collected from those objects, and the search for the suspect is ongoing,” media reports stated.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n
