The European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg has rejected an appeal filed by former President of the Republic of Srpska, Milorad Dodik, who claimed that his fundamental human rights had been violated during criminal proceedings before the Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Klix news portal has unofficially learned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
With the ruling of the Strasbourg court, all legal mechanisms available to the defense at the international level have now been exhausted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This outcome follows an earlier decision by the European Court in April of this year, when it rejected a request from Dodik’s legal team for an interim measure that sought the immediate suspension of the enforcement of decisions issued by domestic courts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Strasbourg court’s decision means that the ruling of the Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina remains fully in force.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Dodik was definitively sentenced to one year in prison and banned from holding any public or political office in the country for six years for failing to comply with decisions issued by High Representative Christian Schmidt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Before turning to the Strasbourg court, his defense team had also filed an appeal with the Constitutional Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina, but that appeal was likewise dismissed as unfounded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
