Celebrated Serbian volleyball player Maja Ognjenovic has once again found herself on the list of head coach Zoran Terzic for the upcoming Nations League, thereby announcing her return to the national team. After saying goodbye after the Olympic Games in Paris, Ognjenovic stated that she feels she might deserve a more beautiful end to her national team career.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maja Ognjenovic said goodbye to the national team on August 6, 2024, on her 40th birthday, after a defeat against Italy in the quarterfinals of the Olympic tournament in Paris.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

-That decision, it seems to me, had been made earlier, and that departure was perhaps unfairly announced. But when a little time passed, when impressions settled, when I looked back, I said that I still deserve maybe some better and more beautiful end. We will see if that will be the case this year \u2013 Maja Ognjenovic stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The legendary national team player of Serbia, born in 1984 in Zrenjanin, is considered one of the best volleyball players in history. As a long-time captain, she led the team to the greatest successes, including a world gold (2018), two European golds (2011, 2019), and two Olympic medals (silver in Rio and bronze in Tokyo). Currently, she plays for Italian Savino Del Bene Scandicci.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking about athletes who play at the top level even in their forties, she emphasized that the key is in the passion for the sport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

-I believe that this happens and that this lasts solely because of pure love. The number of won trophies or the material side of sport are not something that can push you forward. Love and the hunger for proving oneself and lasting definitely win in my case, the Serbian national team player emphasized.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ognjenovic also praised her long-time teammate Tijana Boskovic, saying:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

-I have the impression that even after so many years I simply cannot find the right words to describe the sporting greatness of Tijana Boskovic. We played together for so many years both in Turkey and in the national team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She also looked back on the changes in volleyball during her long career, emphasizing that she was lucky to play in different eras of this sport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

-I was part of a generation that played a significantly different volleyball from this current one. Then that middle part from 2011 to 2018. And this now new generation that came\u2026 I must admit that there are significant differences. This generation that we have now is truly fantastic. These are players who are already key components in top European and world clubs and play at a serious level, even though they are 20 or 22 years old, Ognjenovic added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Schedule of Serbia in the Nations League<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The volleyball players of Serbia will start the competition in the Nations League in Nanjing, China, where they will play against Thailand (June 3), Poland (June 5), China (June 6), and Belgium (June 7). The second week of competition takes them to the Philippines, where they will meet Japan (June 17), Italy (June 18), the Dominican Republic (June 19), and the USA (June 21).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Within the third week, Serbia will be the host in the \u201eBelgrade Arena\u201c and will measure forces against Bulgaria (July 8), France (July 9), Germany (July 11), and the Netherlands (July 12). In addition to the host China, seven more of the best national teams will secure placement in the Final Tournament of the Nations League.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
