The United States of America is changing its approach to the Western Balkans and is abandoning the policy of “state-building” and long-term interventionism, according to a new State Department report to Congress. The focus of American policy is now on the stability of the region, security cooperation, and mutually beneficial partnerships.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The document highlights that previous US engagements contributed to the stabilization of the region, which opens up space for a different model of cooperation \u2014 with greater responsibility of local actors and less reliance on international oversight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Washington lists the preservation of regional stability, suppressing the influence of Russia and China, strengthening economic and trade ties, investments in energy and infrastructure, as well as the fight against organized crime as key priorities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The US plans to continue security cooperation with all countries in the region, including Serbia, while supporting the dialogue between Belgrade and Pri\u0161tina and preserving stability in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Special importance is given to NATO cooperation and the modernization of the defense systems of the countries in the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The second major pillar of American policy relates to the economy. The report emphasizes that the Western Balkans represents an important area for American investments due to its geographical location, resources, and growing technology sector. The US wants a larger presence of its companies in infrastructure, energy, and digital projects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A special focus is placed on energy diversification and reducing the region’s dependence on Russian energy sources. Gas interconnections, investments in renewable energy sources, and the modernization of energy infrastructure are listed as priority projects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The State Department also warns that Russia and China use corruption, weak institutions, and political divisions to expand their influence in the region. Because of this, the US sees stability, economic development, and transparent institutions as a key protection against foreign interference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The conclusion of the report states that the American administration will direct funds toward projects that bring “clear and measurable benefits for American interests,” with a focus on trade, security, the fight against crime, and regional cooperation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
