Family, friends, and colleagues said goodbye today at the New Cemetery in Belgrade to cartoonist Predrag Koraksi\u0107 Corax, who passed away at the age of 93.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the send-off for cremation, the president of the Independent Journalists’ Association of Serbia (NUNS), \u017deljko Bodro\u017ei\u0107, said that Corax’s cartoons will remain as a legacy for generations to come, based on which they will interpret the times and the personalities he drew.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The commemoration for Koraksi\u0107, organized by the newspaper Danas, Novi Optimizam, and NUNS, will be held on Saturday, May 23, at 3 p.m. at the Center for Cultural Decontamination at Bir\u010daninova 21.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cartoonist Predrag Koraksi\u0107 Corax was one of the sharpest and most consistent critics of political and social conditions in Serbia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He was born on June 15, 1933, in Gornja Gorevnica near \u010ca\u010dak, into a family of teachers. He started publishing cartoons already at the age of 17, in 1950 in the satirical magazine Je\u017e, thereby beginning an extraordinary career spanning more than seven decades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For more than three decades he worked at Ve\u010dernje novosti, from where he was dismissed for political reasons in 1993, after which he continued his work in independent media such as Vreme, Danas, Borba, Pe\u0161\u010danik, and Radio Free Europe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For decades, through his cartoons, he defended the right to free thought and freedom of expression, leaving an indelible mark on journalism, media culture, and the public life of Serbia. His recognizable drawing and sharp humor were a symbol of resistance to authoritarianism, nationalism, and the abuse of power, NUNS assessed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As one of the founders of NUNS, he was part of the generation that created space for independent and professional journalism in the most difficult times. Due to his exceptional contribution to the profession and the fight for media freedom, NUNS awarded him the status of honorary member in 2021, on the occasion of his 88th birthday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
