While all of Europe is talking about the deadly hantavirus because of those infected on a cruise ship, in Serbia, the virus also known as “mouse fever” is not a great unknown, especially in the Ivanjica region during the raspberry harvest.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Namely, new cases of infection are registered almost every year. Fatal outcomes are not that frequent, but one woman from Ivanjica went through hell precisely because of the hantavirus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“From a completely healthy woman, I came to a situation where my life was hanging by a thread. The first symptom was a chill, then the temperature, nausea, and vomiting started. I had very strong pains. I am looking at my body and seeing how it grows, as a consequence of the accumulation of fluid in my organism, and only thanks to the doctors at the VMA, the nurses, and professors did I survive. It was a day-and-night battle for life, and I wouldn’t wish for anyone to experience what I did,” said a young woman for RINA who barely survived mouse fever a couple of years ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Viruses and bacteria for leptospirosis and mouse fever can be picked up in nature, most often in rural areas where there are many livestock and field mice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A person becomes infected when they come into contact with the secretions of infected individuals. Those who are most endangered and susceptible to these infections are people whose jobs are related to nature, such as foresters, pickers of wild berries, veterinarians, and farmers. According to Dr. Aksentije Tosic, the incubation period lasts from 10 to 40 days, and the source of infection can be soil, mud, or contaminated water and air.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The urine excreted by animals contains that virus which spreads, and then persons who have some scratches on their hands or legs, and do not protect that wound, allow that infectious agent to enter directly into their blood, and that is how illness occurs. In this region, people generally know what mouse fever and leptospirosis are, but hardly anyone knows how dangerous it truly is, what the symptoms are, and in what way they can protect themselves,” said Dr. Tosic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
