In the Patriarchate of the Serbian Orthodox Church in Belgrade, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the Republic of Serbia and the Serbian Orthodox Church on cooperation regarding the founding of the “Saint Sava” Serbian Orthodox University. A people without education has no future, said President Aleksandar Vu\u010di\u0107, who attended the signing of the Memorandum.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Memorandum was signed by Serbian Patriarch Porfirije and the Prime Minister of the Government of Serbia, \u0110uro Macut. The signing was also attended by the Minister of Education, Dejan Vuk Stankovi\u0107.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vu\u010di\u0107, stated that the signing of the Memorandum of Cooperation on the founding of the Saint Sava University between the Republic of Serbia and the Serbian Orthodox Church is a huge step forward in the method, model, and approach to the education of future generations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the Patriarchate in Belgrade, where the Memorandum was signed, Vu\u010di\u0107 emphasized that a people without education has no future and that our education has never been separated from faith.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He also stated that the state will provide every assistance and support to the Saint Sava University and pointed out that at this university, children will have the opportunity to acquire exceptional knowledge and to inherit patriotism and love for the fatherland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Your goals are great, your dreams are noble. As a state, we will help to make those dreams come true, and I know that by doing so we are doing the best for our children and for our future, because they will be able to acquire an exceptional education, because they will be able to inherit patriotism, the love for their fatherland, as one of the highest values,” said the president.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking about Serbian education, Vu\u010di\u0107 stated that Serbia has passed through a true Golgotha over the last year and a half.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“They tried from the outside and the inside to destroy all our fundamental values, to shatter our faith, and our faith in the future, and our knowledge and our work, and everything upon which we inherited cooperation, but also the conviction that we can be better and more successful. That is why today\u2019s signing of this Memorandum is of key importance,” Vu\u010di\u0107 pointed out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The Church cannot function without the support of the state”<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

He emphasized that, thanks to church schools, the Serbian people did not lose themselves in moments when they lost their state, and added that the church cannot function without the support of the state, and that the state is weak and never useful enough to its people without the support of the church.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“This university, Saint Sava, will be a place where the theological education of future priests will take place side by side with studies in medicine, law, natural sciences, technical sciences, and the arts. As stated in the Memorandum, every calling grounded in the lasting values of truth, virtue, knowledge, and mutual respect contributes to the building of a just and responsible society,” said Vu\u010di\u0107.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pointing out that a people without education has no future, the president stated that this is why every monastery founded a school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Hilandar, Studenica, \u017di\u010da\u2014the academies of their time. Theology was taught in them, but also law, medicine, art, and diplomacy. The monastic cell and the classroom were the same space, because knowledge was considered the prayer of the mind. Education is not a privilege, but a duty,” Vu\u010di\u0107 emphasized.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Referring to a recent statement by Patriarch Porfirije that the education of the Serbian people bears the seal of Saint Sava and that knowledge without goodness is incomplete, and success without love is empty, Vu\u010di\u0107 pointed out that the Serbian people have known this secret through the centuries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Our education was never separated from faith, and if I tried to list everything in which Saint Sava was first, I could not do so without taking up too much time. Let us just say that autocephaly is his life’s work, so we have already said how great he is; if he had only left Hilandar behind, he left much, and where are Manasija, \u017di\u010da?” said the President of Serbia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He also emphasized that Saint Sava was the first writer, the first legislator, the first teacher, and the first significant diplomat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“On the foundations of his work, we are building this house of knowledge today, spiritually grounded, yet new and modern. Today we can say that every monk who copied manuscripts by a flickering candle, every teacher who taught children letters and faith in a modest school by the church, every generation that kept the spark of knowledge and spirituality as the greatest national sanctuary during dark times, is our great wealth,” said Vu\u010di\u0107.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He also recalled that Despot Stefan Lazarevi\u0107 founded a scriptorium in Resava, a medieval university that gathered scholars, translators, poets, and writers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The Resava school translated from Greek, bringing European thought into the Serbian language. In times when we were losing our state, we did not lose ourselves, because we had the church and its school. The restoration of the Patriarchate of Pe\u0107 in 1557 under Makarije Sokolovi\u0107 gave a new impulse to educational life, and the priest often held a chalkboard alongside the altar,” said President Vu\u010di\u0107.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
