However, the best evidence that life across the pond is not all milk and honey are the stories of those who experienced the dark side of the coin, like Tihomir Momirović, who decided to serve in the US Army after part of his family moved to Chicago.

However, shortly after arriving at the battlefield, he realized it was a big mistake, and in late 1967, through a combination of circumstances, he arrived in Yugoslavia.

Born in Karaburma, Tihomir moved to America, to the city of Chicago, with his father, brother, and sister when he was only 12 years old. He spoke about his life there and how he ended up in Vietnam while guest-starring on a show hosted by Belgrade Radio and Television journalist Svetolik Mitić, which aired on February 24, 1968, following his return to Yugoslavia. On that occasion, he wore the uniform of a corporal in the US Army and brought photos from Vietnam with him.

During the conversation with Mitić, as well as with a journalist from the newspaper Večernje novosti who conducted a multi-part interview with him, Momirović spoke about what the training for Vietnam looked like, the battles themselves, and the dark sides of the war. As he said then, after managing to get leave to visit his sick mother in Belgrade, he did not want to return to Vietnam, or to America itself.

“I was 18 years old when I joined the army on July 30, 1966. I arrived at the Fort Knox military base in Kentucky, where I spent a week, before going to another base for training, and when I finished training, I went to Fort Polk in Louisiana. After that followed a departure to a base in Texas, from where I left for Vietnam. At that camp, they told us we were going to Vietnam. In America, we had jungle training; it was a replica of the Vietnamese jungle. There you train at night; we practiced how to attack, how to remove traps, how to set them, when to shoot, and when not to…” he began his military story.

As he said, the training camp had a replica of authentic Vietnamese villages where they had demonstration exercises. Specifically, they practiced tactics on how to search villages, how to storm them if they were hostile, and how to enter if they were peaceful. Additionally, as Tihomir said, they practiced how to find traps and how to search dugouts where enemy forces were hidden. What he specifically noted was the fact that during practice they used gas dropped from helicopters, which served to drive people out of houses so they could then be neutralized. According to him, that gas in real battles was more poisonous than the one used in training and could kill a person in just 15 minutes.

He received the call to go to Vietnam in May. As he said, he then received a month’s leave before heading to Vietnam in June 1967, via California and Hawaii. There they received money that was only used in Vietnam. His starting salary was 280 dollars, and as he said, it depended on the rank.

The camp where they stayed during the war in Vietnam was surrounded by barbed wire, and only the fortification had bunkers and heavy weaponry necessary for defense. Also, inside were workshops for all vehicles, weapons, helicopters, and planes. From “Camp Cu Chi,” as it was called, Tihomir and the other American soldiers set out on all actions. During the conversation, he showed the RTS host on a map of the campus where everything was located, as well as what the life of a soldier inside the fortification looked like.

FIND OUT MORE

DODIK WELCOMED IN CHICAGO BY BOSNIAK DEMONSTRATORS AND AMERICAN RECOGNITION: He compared himself to Trump, renounced Serbs who committed crimes, but reinstated there was no genocide in Srebrenica! They gathered them there and sent them to America in coffins by plane. I spent from June to November at the front. The first day we arrived, we started building a bunker; until it was finished, there was no rest or respite—it had to be done. That very evening, the bombing by the Vietnamese began. In that action, there were no fatalities, but there were many wounded. After a week, they bombed again; there were casualties on both sides then. That was the first time I saw dead soldiers.”

When asked how the Vietnamese forces fought, he had only words of praise for the opponent.

“The Vietnamese fight in large groups, of 500 and 1,000, with combined attacks, infantry, and mortars. They are very good fighters; they knew what they were fighting for and did not give up easily.”

“The hardest time for me was when I was at ‘Fire Base Charlie.’ I was there for six days, and they bombed that area for eight days. It all started when I arrived; it was very hard. A friend from the army died there too…”

Due to the fact that he spent so much continuous time in the war zone, he received a medal awarded to those who spend more than 72 hours on the battlefield. During his stay at the front, he was also wounded, for which he received the “Purple Heart” medal awarded to those wounded or killed.

“Some Viet Cong set a device on a tree and waited for someone to pass to pull the cord and fire. There were four or five of us; one died, while two of us were wounded.”

During the conversation, he also spoke about life in the jungle and the use of narcotics among soldiers.

“They used drugs. When I arrived, I didn’t know about it; there was morphine and ‘pot,’ that is, weed that the Vietnamese sold. We bought it to calm our nerves. It feels like drinking brandy or beer. Everyone used it there.”

As he said, when he saw everything happening at the front, he wrote letters to his brother telling him not to come to Vietnam and to get out however he could. However, after two months of receiving no reply, upon returning to America and before the trip to Yugoslavia, he found out that his brother had also ended up in Vietnam; since he was a medical student, he was attached to the medics.

To get out of the hell of Vietnam, he wrote to his mother in Yugoslavia to send him a letter stating she was ill and that his presence was necessary. Although he did not succeed at first, after three months, he received leave to visit his mother, who truly was in the hospital. From Saigon, he went to California, from where he flew to Chicago, then to Belgrade, where he was met by his stepfather who lived with his mother in Karaburma, after which he visited his mother in the hospital.

“I was born here, I’m glad I came… I wouldn’t want to return to Vietnam. The service term there is about a year. On average, about 300 or 400 out of a thousand return,” he said at the end of the conversation, stating that while in the jungles of Vietnam, like other soldiers, he most often sang the song “I Wanna Go Home,” performed by Bobby Bare.

After appearing on the first program of Belgrade Radio and Television, as well as in several print media of that era, Tihomir decided to stay in Yugoslavia. He soon married, but divorced after just one year, after which he eventually decided to go back to America. There he served a sentence as a deserter lasting eight months. Upon leaving prison, he married Marija, a girl he met before going to Vietnam, and had two children with her, according to the magazine portal “Oko.”

Tihomir and Marija had their children, Violeta and Rade. Ultimately, the couple divorced in 1979. Momirović lived in Greece and Serbia in his final years. Unfortunately, he passed away in 2022 and was buried in Belgrade.

MORE TOPICS:

CONFESSION OF A SERB WHO FOUGHT IN VIETNAM: Started from Chicago, wounded in the hell of the jungle, received a medal, his mother saved his life in the end!
