A company owned by the father of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has found itself at the center of a new scandal after claims emerged that it supplied poor quality construction material for the reconstruction of the Budapest\u2013Belgrade railway line, reports the portal 444.hu.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to these allegations, the company Dolomit Kft, majority-owned by Orban’s father Gy\u0151z\u0151 Orban Sr., received complaints as early as February 2023 from the main contractors \u2013 the Chinese company China Tiejiuju Engineering & Construction and the firm V-H\u00edd, linked to businessman Lorinc Meszaros.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As stated, the delivered material did not meet the technical standards of the Hungarian State Railways (MAV), especially regarding the size and distribution of grains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Problematic layer crucial for track stability<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

According to a letter from the Chinese contractor dated April 2023, samples of already installed material were analyzed in an independent laboratory, which determined that the granulation was not appropriate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The independent laboratory determined that the grain size distribution was not appropriate.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This deficiency is particularly concerning because the disputed material is used for a layer that plays a key role.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“This is problematic because this construction material is needed for the railway foundation layer, which plays a key role in the stability and load-bearing capacity of the track.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although a second laboratory, hired by the Chinese company, assessed that the material “barely meets the regulations,” doubts about its quality remained serious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The company admitted the problem, but the material was still used<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to 444.hu, the company Dolomit admitted that there were problems with the composition of the material, stating that heavy rains at the beginning of the year led to the mixing of mud and clay with the stone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although they promised improvements, documents show that significant changes did not occur, and the disputed material was nevertheless partially incorporated into the project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It refers, as stated, to the so-called SZK1 mixture \u2013 a combination of sand and gravel used to form a stable, almost waterproof layer under the rails.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the same time, claims are coming from the industry that Orban’s family firm sells stone at significantly higher prices than the competition, with a reputation for high quality \u2013 which has now been called into question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During 2022 and 2023, Dolomit delivered more than 200,000 tons of stone for this project, and the company regularly receives state contracts, including the expansion of the M1 highway. In 2024 alone, it achieved a profit of nearly 2.7 billion forints, which is approximately around 7 million euros, and that money was withdrawn from the company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Supervision launched over another Orban firm<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

In the meantime, additional pressure is coming from another side \u2013 a mining inspection procedure has been launched against another company connected to the Orban family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This concerns the firm Hah\u00f3t T\u0151zeg Kft., owned by Orban’s brother Gy\u0151z\u0151 Orban and their mother Erzs\u00e9bet S\u00edpos Orban. The investigation is being led by the Supervisory Authority for Regulatory Activities (SZTFH), which is checking whether the company complies with legal provisions on exploitation quantities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This institution states that the procedure is ongoing and that for now they cannot disclose details or eventual sanctions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unlike Dolomit, this firm is not among the most profitable in the family business \u2013 in 2024 it achieved a revenue of 360 million forints (about 930,000 euros) and a profit of about 134.5 million forints (approximately 350,000 euros).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
