Minister of Justice Nenad Vuji\u0107 said today that the eventual release from prison of Ratko Mladi\u0107, convicted in The Hague for genocide and other crimes, for treatment in Serbia depends on the President of the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals, Graciela Gatti Santana, as it is her discretionary right, but that Serbia is ready to offer additional guarantees.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We have now given guarantees for compliance with all orders the Mechanism has, in case there are additional ones such as the presence of their representatives to monitor the general’s health condition, security measures, the presence of some media, and so on. These are all possibilities; we have provided everything they have requested so far in some cases. If they think of something new, we are ready,” Vuji\u0107, who visited Mladi\u0107 in prison, told RTS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“This is not a question of politics, nor of the court verdict itself, which we can define one way or another; this is a question of life,” Vuji\u0107 said, stating that he saw that Mladi\u0107 is “gradually fading” and that punishment, even by international standards, must not be “revenge,” so Serbia is “preparing for an additional appeal to the United Nations and the Human Rights Committee.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Vuji\u0107, the Mladi\u0107 family has received his medical documentation and “doctors are surprised by some non-compliance with European protocols that were not followed; they saw certain omissions in the treatment.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I think the Mechanism also realizes that there are certain omissions in the treatment, and the request from the family and doctors was approved very quickly; they will be there on Wednesday, and we requested that as soon as the documentation arrived. We see that they realize it too. I believe that in his case, international standards have been violated because UN rules state that every prisoner must have the right to adequate care,” said Vuji\u0107.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
