Twenty-two men from Bosnia and Herzegovina who, as members of the so-called Islamic State (IS), had been in Syrian prisons under Kurdish control for years, have been transferred to Iraq where they could face prosecution.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Citizens of BiH began leaving for Syria in 2012 to join various militant groups, with the largest number joining the so-called IS, reports Sarajevo-based Klix, adding that after the territorial defeat of IS, they ended up in Kurdish and other prisons, including 22 BiH citizens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Due to recent military pressure from the Syrian leadership on the Kurds in northeastern Syria, camps collapsed\u2014the men were transferred to Iraq, while some of the women and children remain in the Roj camp under Kurdish control in northern Syria, and some of them moved to Idlib following the dissolution of the Al-Hol camp.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In February 2026, due to the newly emerged conflict situation in Syria and fears that they might escape, American forces transferred the prisoners to Iraq.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The citizens of BiH are under investigation and are currently being held in custody at the Al Karkh Central Prison.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Iraqi Supreme Judicial Council stated that it is currently too early to speak about extraditions to BiH.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is added that a strict anti-terrorism law is applied in Iraq, prescribing long-term prison sentences as well as the death penalty for membership in terrorist groups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
