President of the United States Donald Trump announced today that Secretary of Homeland Security (DHS) Kristi Noem will resign at the end of the month, after just over a year in office. Her successor will be Republican Senator from Oklahoma, Markwayne Mullin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI am pleased to announce that the highly respected Senator from Oklahoma, Markwayne Mullin, will become Secretary of Homeland Security (DHS) as of March 31, 2026,\u201d Trump stated in a post on his social media platform Truth Social.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He added that Noem, whom he said \u201cserved well,\u201d will take on a new role as \u201cEnvoy for America\u2019s Shield,\u201d leading a new security initiative in the Western Hemisphere, NBC News reports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
During her tenure, Noem oversaw intensified deportations of migrants and enforcement of other immigration policies, a key promise of Trump\u2019s electoral platform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
However, the administration\u2019s actions in Minneapolis, including deployment of thousands of federal troops and the use of harsh tactics, drew sharp criticism of her leadership of DHS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Noem refused to apologize for labeling two U.S. citizens, Rene Gudd and Alex Pretty, who were killed by U.S. advisory agents, as \u201cdomestic terrorists,\u201d though she acknowledged that investigations into their deaths are ongoing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Kristi Noem is the first member of the Trump administration to leave during this term. Prior to her service in the administration, she served as governor of the U.S. state of South Dakota.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
