She was sentenced to a year and a half in prison for insurance billing fraud. This was intended as assistance to small businesses that suffered major financial losses during the Covid pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Milica \u0160umakovi\u0107, a Serbian woman from Chicago, was sentenced to a year and a half in prison for participating in organized fraud in the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The arrested Serbian woman Milica \u0160umakovi\u0107 obtained more than 16 million dollars in loans and grants for small businesses under the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act (CARES Act), which landed her on the blacklist of the President of the United States, Donald Trump.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Milica \u0160umakovi\u0107 was among seven defendants before the U.S. District Court in Chicago for participating in a scheme that submitted more than 300 false applications seeking over 40 million dollars in benefits from the Economic Injury Disaster Loan Program (EIDL).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a source of relief under the CARES Act, the EIDL program was intended to provide assistance in the form of loans or grants to cover working capital and other operating expenses for legitimate businesses that suffered revenue losses as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"583\" src=\"http:\/\/serbiantimes.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/01\/Clipboard_01-22-2026_01-1024x583.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-198974\" srcset=\"https:\/\/serbiantimes.info\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/01\/Clipboard_01-22-2026_01-1024x583.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/serbiantimes.info\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/01\/Clipboard_01-22-2026_01-300x171.jpg 300w, https:\/\/serbiantimes.info\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/01\/Clipboard_01-22-2026_01-768x437.jpg 768w, https:\/\/serbiantimes.info\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/01\/Clipboard_01-22-2026_01.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Milica \u0160umakovi\u0107 and her accomplices claimed they were company owners<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>\u0160umakovi\u0107 and her accomplices claimed in their applications that they were owners and operators of various businesses in Illinois and Florida.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The applications and accompanying documentation contained materially false representations about the defendants\u2019 alleged companies, including the number of employees and revenue amounts. The defendants\u2019 scheme caused the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) to pay out more than 16 million dollars in fraudulent benefits. \u0160umakovi\u0107 personally submitted and assisted accomplice Marko Nikoli\u0107 in submitting eighteen false applications seeking more than 2.6 million dollars in benefits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u0160umakovi\u0107 (33), of Chicago, pleaded guilty last year to a federal charge of wire fraud. U.S. District Judge Nancy L. Maldonado sentenced \u0160umakovi\u0107 on April 25, 2024, to 18 months in federal prison and ordered her to pay 1.68 million dollars in restitution to the SBA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Milica and two other defendants pleaded guilty<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Marko Nikoli\u0107 (36), of La Grange, Illinois, and Branko Aleksi\u0107 (34), of Chicago, pleaded guilty to wire fraud and money laundering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Marko Nikoli\u0107 was sentenced to four years and two months in prison and ordered to pay 6.9 million dollars in restitution, while Aleksi\u0107 was sentenced to two years and eleven months in prison and ordered to pay 575,000 dollars in restitution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Four defendants on the run<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The remaining four defendants \u2014 Maja Nikoli\u0107 (36) of Brookfield, Illinois, Neboj\u0161a Simeunovi\u0107 (38) of Lyons, Illinois, Mihajlo Stani\u0161i\u0107 (34) of Willowbrook, Illinois, and \u0110or\u0111e Todorovi\u0107 (33) of Chicago \u2014 are considered fugitives and may currently be abroad. Hill, Acting Inspector General of the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA); Justin Campbell, Special Agent in Charge of IRS Criminal Investigation (IRS-CI) in the Chicago Field Office; and Hannibal Ware, Inspector General of the U.S. Small Business Administration. The government was represented by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Kavita J. Babu and Brian Hayes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe assistance programs offered by the CARES Act were designed to help small businesses struggling to survive the Covid-19 pandemic.
