Traditionally, the largest migrant group is the Turks, and the most numerous migrants from the territory of the former Yugoslavia come to Germany from Croatia.

Foreigners in Germany, more than 14 million of them, make up 16.8 percent of the total population, which stands at about 83.6 million, according to data from the Central Register of Foreigners (AZR) from November 2025.

However, the number of people with a migrant background is significantly higher. This group includes not only foreigners but also children of foreigners born in Germany who acquired German citizenship at birth. This group also includes so-called ethnic German repatriates from Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union, as well as naturalized foreigners, reports N1.

According to the 2024 micro-census, almost 25.2 million people in Germany had a migrant background, representing more than 30 percent of the total population. The German portal Focus writes that these figures have increased since then.

According to AZR data, the most foreigners come from 10 countries: Turkey, Ukraine, Syria, Romania, Poland, Italy, Afghanistan, Bulgaria, Croatia, and Greece.

Citizens of Croatia are also the most numerous group of foreigners from the territory of the former Yugoslavia. According to official data, there are 414,555 of them in Germany.

They are followed by those who went to Germany with a Kosovo passport, numbering 322,571.

There are 262,479 Serbian citizens in Germany, which is more than citizens of BiH – 246,724.

Turks have made up the largest group of foreigners in Germany for decades, and with 1.52 million, they still hold the leading position.

This could soon change, as the number of Ukrainians in Germany has risen to more than 1.4 million. A sharp increase in the number of Ukrainians has been recorded since February 2022, when Russia began its attack on Ukraine.

Since then, hundreds of thousands of women, children, and men flee from Ukraine to Germany every year. For comparison, at the end of 2020, only 135,000 Ukrainian citizens lived in Germany.

MORE TOPICS:

RAINY SERBS FROM NORTH AMERICA: They raised a church from the ashes, and now Americans are converting to Orthodoxy with them!
