While young people increasingly choose cities over villages, young An\u0111elo Petkovi\u0107 (28) decided to remain in his native village. Although he had the opportunity to live in Paris, he chose to stay on his ancestral land, in the small village of Kr\u010dimir on the slopes of Suva Planina.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cMy village is more beautiful than Paris\u201d certainly applies in the case of this twenty-eight-year-old. He lives here, works, engages in livestock breeding and agriculture, takes care of animals, produces food, and says that it gives him satisfaction and that he feels free in the countryside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThis is the city of light for me. I\u2019m not used to the city and I couldn\u2019t live in one. I was born here, I grew up here, I stayed here \u2014 I don\u2019t know anything better. My day is full, from morning until dark. I do everything: farming, we sow wheat, corn, mow clover, tend to greenhouses a bit, sheep\u2026,\u201d says An\u0111elo, whose day starts at five in the morning and ends around 7:30 in the evening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
An\u0111elo lives with his grandmother Dragica, who has taken care of him since childhood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI have a son, I have a daughter, but An\u0111elo has also been my greatest support, and to this day I think that as long as I\u2019m alive he won\u2019t leave here. And we must clarify that his mother has been living and working in Paris for more than 20 years; he was with her, lived there and tried to stay, but something still pulls him back to his roots. It\u2019s nicer for him here than in Paris, and what can I do \u2014 if I were left alone, I don\u2019t know how I would manage, but he is my greatest support,\u201d says grandmother Dragica.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
An\u0111elo works at the Health Center in Gad\u017ein Han, and after finishing his shift, he immediately comes home, changes clothes, and goes to take care of the livestock, tending and feeding them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cFor those who aren\u2019t used to work, everything is hard. For those who are used to it \u2014 I\u2019ve been, as they say, worn down and accustomed to work since childhood \u2014 nothing is hard for me. My friends are surprised that I stayed in the village,\u201d says An\u0111elo, adding that girls are not enthusiastic about village life either.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIt\u2019s difficult; they don\u2019t really support village life \u2014 men don\u2019t support it either, let alone girls. There\u2019s nothing to be done about that,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
An\u0111elo says that today the village has all the conditions for life: Leskovac is half an hour away by car, and Ni\u0161 is about an hour away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThose who keep more livestock also receive subsidies \u2014 the state provides good ones. The roads are well done, the internet is good, television \u2014 we have everything, just like in the city,\u201d says this hardworking young man.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
