“Dozens of people” have perished in a fire that broke out around 1:30 AM at the Le Constellation bar in Crans-Montana. Authorities stated that approximately one hundred people were injured.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Swiss outlet 24heures<\/em> carries a statement from Melko (19), who stands surrounded by friends while waiting for news about one of his companions. Melko had been with that friend throughout the evening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The young man described what he saw inside the establishment: according to his testimony, which matches the account of another witness, pyrotechnics attached to drink bottles ignited the ceiling.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Note: Authorities are still officially investigating the formal cause of the fire.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The ceiling, he says, caught fire very quickly, which led to panic and a crush toward the exit of the room, which is located in the basement and reached via stairs leading into a hallway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Neighbors in Shock<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Eklesi Andrea, the caretaker of the building next to the bar, took in evacuated residents from the building where Le Constellation is located. He and his wife were awakened by screams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“People were screaming, we saw black smoke, and it smelled terrible. The ambulance and firefighters arrived very quickly. We got dressed and went downstairs. The residents were coming out in a panic, fearing the fire would spread to the rest of the building. Many came to us; people were terrified. We made them coffee and stayed with them until four in the morning,” he described.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Families Still Without News<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Family members of those who are missing are being directed to the Regan Congress Center<\/strong> in Crans-Montana, where authorities have established a reception center. Parents and relatives are arriving at the building in hopes of receiving information about the fate of their loved ones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“He\u2019s gone. No one knows where he is!” cried a mother in tears, searching for her son.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since last night, the injured from the Canton of Valais have been transported to hospitals across the French-speaking part of Switzerland. Ten helicopters<\/strong> are circling the sky to transport the wounded. At the HUG hospital (Geneva), where the first casualty was admitted during the night, staff are currently preparing for the arrival of additional patients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“An assessment of the situation is ongoing,” the Geneva hospital stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This disaster occurred at a time when hospitals are already facing an extremely high volume of interventions due to seasonal flu, the holidays, and winter accidents. Authorities have asked the public to be extra cautious and not to seek medical help unless absolutely necessary. The population has been called upon to avoid any form of risk today out of solidarity, so as not to further burden an already saturated healthcare system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
