Some have completely forgotten the hero who avenged the fallen students!<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Veselin \u0160ijakovi\u0107<\/strong> killed a Gestapo officer, one of those most responsible for the Nazi crime in Kragujevac on October 21, 1941, when <strong>3,000 civilians were executed, including 300 students!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Facebook page &#8220;Narodna istorija&#8221; (National History) published the story of Veselin, who killed the German officer out of revenge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We translate it in full:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Veselin \u0160ijakovi\u0107 killed a Gestapo officer, one of those most responsible for the Nazi crime in <strong>Kragujevac<\/strong> on October 21, 1941. Today, he is forgotten by the state, although the <strong>Serbian Orthodox Church awarded him a medal.<\/strong> Serbs do not remember him&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/post.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Fnarodnaistorijasrba%2Fphotos%2Fa.3144087359018775%2F3393631430731032%2F%3Ftype%3D3&#038;show_text=true&#038;width=500\" width=\"500\" height=\"705\" style=\"border:none;overflow:hidden\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" allow=\"autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; picture-in-picture; web-share\"><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<p>Veselin \u0160ijakovi\u0107 was born in 1924 in Nik\u0161i\u0107, where his parents had moved from Andrijevica. <strong>World War II<\/strong> found him in Kragujevac, where he was studying at the Military Technical School. When the Germans occupied the building of the Military Technical Institute, they captured all the cadets, including him. Soon, however, they released the Croats, Muslims, and Slovenes, and <strong>sent the Serbs to forced labor.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Leader of a Trio<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2013 With two friends, Veselin managed to escape into the forest, where they met members of the Yugoslav Army in the Homeland, specifically the Jelica Corps, which had already gained fame for liberating Gornji Milanovac, U\u017eice, \u010ca\u010dak, and Po\u017eega. They decided to stay with them and were assigned to a unit responsible for sabotage. The unit was composed of trios. <strong>Veselin was placed at the head of one trio.<\/strong> And so, his war began at the end of July 1941.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/serbiantimes.info\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Veselin-Sijakovic-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-100000203175\" srcset=\"https:\/\/serbiantimes.info\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Veselin-Sijakovic-1.jpg 385w, https:\/\/serbiantimes.info\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Veselin-Sijakovic-1-300x293.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 385px) 100vw, 385px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2013 In the autumn of 1942, the Supreme Command, based on a proposal from the Ravna Gora movement members in Belgrade, <strong>decided to liquidate the Gestapo Major who had a crucial role in the execution of civilians and students in Kragujevac.<\/strong> A highly experienced trio was assigned this task. We waited in the courtyard for him to arrive from a gathering at a nearby hotel. Around one o&#8217;clock after midnight, accompanied by three soldiers, he appeared, staggering, clearly drunk. The soldiers helped him climb the internal staircase and returned to patrol the street. When he opened his bedroom window, our job was significantly easier. For the first time, my hands trembled, so hard that the rungs of the ladder started hitting the wall. I told myself: <em>I guess I&#8217;m not meant for tasks like this!<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/serbiantimes.info\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Veselin-Sijakovic-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-100000203176\" srcset=\"https:\/\/serbiantimes.info\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Veselin-Sijakovic-2.jpg 500w, https:\/\/serbiantimes.info\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Veselin-Sijakovic-2-300x203.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2013 I somehow managed to climb up and enter unnoticed. I grabbed him by the hair with my left hand, pushed his head against the pillow, and plunged the knife into his heart with my right hand. He roared like a lion! Since he couldn&#8217;t move his head, his legs shot up and thrashed constantly! At the same moment, a woman who was lying in the neighboring bed screamed, to my surprise. <strong>Confused, I took out my pistol and shot her with a couple of bullets!<\/strong> My comrades, who were waiting in the courtyard, thought <strong>the German officer had shot at me<\/strong> because the agreement was not to use firearms, so one of them rushed up the stairs. <strong>We collided on the stairs, which I was more falling down backward than stepping down.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2013 Sirens blared, calling for an alarm, and we fled through the neighboring courtyards. Only then did I realize that I had forgotten <strong>to take the German officer&#8217;s satchel<\/strong>, which was one of my tasks. They surrounded the house where the three of us and the residents were located. They shot at the house with launchers, wounding a one-year-old child. When I saw that they would kill that family too, I decided to surrender. The investigation lasted three months. The trial was held at the Military Court in Ni\u0161. They accused me of fighting against the Partisans, which I denied, because, apart from the day they caught me, I had never fired a bullet at them. They kept me in total isolation from other prisoners, in the worst conditions, even though I was severely ill. When I was at death&#8217;s door in 1952, they released me to die at home. Friends from Belgrade found out about my case and transferred me there, where doctor Dr. Veselin Savi\u0107 saved me. Namely, in 2000, he managed to enter Christ&#8217;s Cell (in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre), along with the priests, which no civilian had managed to do before. \u2013 After praying in Christ&#8217;s Cell, he grabbed a 100-kilogram, three-meter-high cross, carried it 20 meters, and handed it over to the priests who were heading towards Christ&#8217;s Tomb. The priests could not believe their eyes\u2014that an old man was carrying such a large cross; they told the Patriarch, who invited him as a guest and presented him with the <em>Gramata<\/em> &#8220;Knight of Orthodoxy.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Veselin \u0160ijakovi\u0107 died on September 27, 2009.
