President Donald Trump signed a law ending the longest government shutdown in the history of the United States, just hours after the House of Representatives voted to restart halted food assistance programs, pay hundreds of thousands of federal employees, and restore the disrupted air traffic control system, Reuters reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The historic 43-day shutdown, which caused financial hardship for federal workers, airport delays, and long lines in front of food banks, has been brought to an end with the signing of this law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The House of Representatives, controlled by Republicans, passed the legislative package with 222 votes \u201cin favor\u201d and 209 \u201cagainst.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The signing ceremony for the government funding law took place a few hours after the House passed the bill by a majority of 222 to 209, while the Senate had approved the measure earlier on Monday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe must never allow this to happen again,\u201d Trump said in the Oval Office during the signing ceremony, taking the opportunity to criticize the Democrats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThis is not how a country is run,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
During the congressional debate over the law, Republicans accused Democrats of deliberately causing \u201cpain\u201d to citizens for political gain, while Democrats claimed that Republicans were protecting the interests of the wealthy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
