The administration of US President Donald Trump has identified targets for an attack in Venezuela, including military facilities used for drug trafficking, US officials familiar with the situation confirmed today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The unnamed officials told the Wall Street Journal that the targets, if Trump decides to order airstrikes, would send a clear message to Venezuelan President Nicol\u00e1s Maduro that it is time to step down. Although Trump has not made a final decision on issuing an order for ground strikes, officials said that a potential air campaign would focus on targets central to drug gangs and the Maduro regime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to one official, potential targets being considered include military-controlled ports and airports allegedly used for drug trafficking, including naval facilities and runways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Since Trump’s inauguration, the United States has deployed a large amount of military firepower to the Caribbean, while simultaneously stepping up a lethal campaign against alleged drug smugglers in the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Airstrikes on targets inside Venezuela would mark a significant escalation of the campaign, which has so far been limited to airstrikes on vessels that the US Department of Defense, following the attacks, stated were transporting drugs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
