Serbian truck driver Borko Stankovi\u0107 has been arrested in the USA after one person died in a multi-vehicle collision on US Route 20 in Portage, police announced.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The arrest was made for driving without a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The investigation revealed that a Ram Sprinter vehicle, traveling eastbound, slowed down due to stopped traffic. A semi-truck with a trailer, operated by Stankovi\u0107 of Lyons, Illinois, approached at an inappropriate speed, after which he abruptly swerved and struck a Subaru Crosstrek.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The collision caused the semi-truck to overlap, and the front of the trailer struck the rear of the van. The van was then pushed into a road sign. The driver and passenger of the van were treated at the scene and released.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The driver of the Subaru, a 54-year-old man, died at the scene, authorities announced. His identity has not been released.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The investigation found that Stankovi\u0107 did not possess a CDL, nor was his company registered with the Department of Transportation. He was also in possession of a suspended CDL from Illinois, which belonged to a family member, police announced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stankovi\u0107 was arrested and charged with one count of criminal recklessness resulting in death and one count of misdemeanor reckless homicide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While Stankovi\u0107 was being taken to the Porter County Jail, police stated that it was determined an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detainer would be placed on him due to his immigration status.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is currently unknown whether Stankovi\u0107 is being detained by ICE or is in police custody.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
