Krstovdan (Cross Day) is a great holiday celebrated by the Serbian Orthodox Church and the faithful, the day when the Holy Cross was found and excavated on Golgotha and the day when it was returned from Persia to Jerusalem. This holiday is also called the Exaltation of the Holy Cross.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The significance of the holiday is indicated by the fact that our church celebrates it twice a year, on January 18th and September 27th, in memory of the finding of the cross on which Jesus Christ was crucified.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The most important rule that every adult should follow on this day is to spend it in fasting and prayer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As we said, fasting is mandatory for tomorrow’s holiday, specifically dry-eating, which is ranked second among all fasts in terms of strictness or method of abstinence, after complete abstinence from all kinds of food and drink (even water).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dry-eating means consuming dry food or just bread and water, once a day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let us remind you, true fasting has two sides, bodily and spiritual, and consists of both abstinence from meat and dairy products, and abstinence from bad thoughts, desires, and deeds, the multiplication of prayers, good deeds, and the practice of all evangelical virtues. Therefore, Saint Basil warns: “Do not limit the benefit of fasting only to abstinence from food, because true fasting is the removal of evil deeds.” Fasting restrains pleasure-seeking and gluttony.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
