US<\/strong> President Donald Trump<\/strong> yesterday threatened sanctions on Afghanistan<\/strong>, without specifying which, if the Taliban<\/strong> who are in power in that country, “do not return to the USA<\/strong>” the Bagram<\/strong> air base that the Americans<\/strong> abandoned during their withdrawal in 2021<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“If Afghanistan<\/strong> does not return the Bagram<\/strong> air base to those who built it, the United States of America<\/strong>, serious things will happen,” the US<\/strong> president wrote on his platform Truth Social<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He also mentioned that idea a few days ago at a joint press conference with British<\/strong> Prime Minister Keir Starmer<\/strong> on the last day of his visit to Great Britain<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“One of the reasons why we want that base is, as you know, that it is located one hour from where China<\/strong> produces its nuclear weapons,” Trump<\/strong> said then.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When asked yesterday if he plans to send American<\/strong> troops to retake Bagram<\/strong>, Trump<\/strong> said that the USA<\/strong> is “currently in negotiations with Afghanistan<\/strong>,” that they want to retake that base and, as he pointed out, “quickly, immediately.” “And if they don’t return it, you will find out what I intend to do,” Trump<\/strong> said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bagram<\/strong>, which is located 50<\/strong> kilometers from Kabul<\/strong>, is the largest air base in Afghanistan<\/strong> and served the Americans<\/strong> to conduct operations for two decades after the September 11, 2001<\/strong> attacks and the invasion of Afghanistan<\/strong> carried out by an international coalition led by the USA<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

American<\/strong> and NATO<\/strong> troops withdrew from the base in July 2021<\/strong>, when the Taliban<\/strong> were taking control of large parts of Afghanistan<\/strong> before finally occupying the entire country the following month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump<\/strong> has repeatedly, since returning to power, expressed regret over the loss of the base; and has criticized his predecessor Joe Biden<\/strong> for the withdrawal of Americans<\/strong> from Afghanistan<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump<\/strong> also complains about the growing influence of the rival superpower China<\/strong> in Afghanistan<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
