European Commission<\/strong> spokesperson Guillaume Mercier<\/strong> stated today that Russia’s<\/strong> claims that the European Union<\/strong> is encouraging protests in Serbia<\/strong> are incorrect, emphasizing that it is “another attempt by Russia<\/strong> to spread disinformation and hostile political rhetoric against the EU<\/strong>, its member states, or those countries that are candidates for the EU<\/strong>.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a statement to Insajder<\/strong>, Mercier<\/strong> conveyed the EU’s<\/strong> regret that certain media outlets in Serbia<\/strong> spread that narrative and stressed that the authorities in Serbia<\/strong> should act to combat disinformation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

EU calls on Serbia to fight against disinformation and anti-EU narratives<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Manipulation and foreign information interference, including anti-EU narratives propagated by numerous media outlets, as well as disinformation – remain concerning issues that need to be addressed urgently. The authorities in Serbia<\/strong> are obliged to take greater responsibility for combating disinformation, as well as to ensure more proactive and objective communication about Serbia’s<\/strong> accession process to the EU<\/strong>, and about the EU<\/strong> itself,” said Mercier<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He recalled the words of Enlargement Commissioner Marta Koss<\/strong> in the European Parliament<\/strong> where she indicated that Serbia<\/strong> is a candidate country for the EU<\/strong>, where they truly want a democratic Serbia<\/strong> within the European Union<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We will continue with constructive engagement and will do everything in our power to help Serbia<\/strong> advance on its path to accession to the European Union<\/strong>. However, for that to happen, it is necessary to take concrete democratic steps and reform,” Mercier<\/strong> told Insajder<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a reminder, the Foreign Intelligence Service of Russia (SVR)<\/strong> wrote in a statement on Monday<\/strong> about the alleged preparation of a violent takeover of power in Serbia<\/strong> on the anniversary of the accident at the Novi Sad<\/strong> railway station on November 1<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
