Even as a young man, he dedicated himself to a strict ascetic life, and he spent the greater part of his life standing on a pillar (stolp), praying to God constantly. His unusual and extremely difficult ascetic practice attracted a multitude of people who came to see him, listen to his teachings, and seek advice. Unlike the civil calendar, the liturgical year in the Church begins on September 1 according to the old calendar, and on September 14 according to the new one.
